No not today but found these in an old album and scanned them. Pretty sure it was around 1990 pretty sure this sea king came with them and from memory they were off a visiting carrier. HMS Invincible

Great pics Beagle. The red shorted super hero in the first photo is a bit of a worry. ;D

Perhaps he thought that because the RN was in town, he might get lucky? ;D That is not a good look - having the meat and two vege out on display like that in public! Great photos by the way, Beags.

No not today but found these in an old album and scanned them. Pretty sure it was around 1990 Most likely to be 1983 during Exercise 'Orient Express'. IIRC that is the only time either Invincible or Sea Harriers have been around these parts. I remember being given a day off school by my dad to see the ship berthed at the Overseas Terminal in Wellington, which displeased mum no end....

Yes the Sea King is at Hobsonville outside the Wasp hangar. The Harrier that was at the 1992 airshow was RAF, this one is a Sea Harrier.

I think Mumbles is right about the 1983 visit, I recall seeing the carrier too and the Sea Harriers on board. The Falklands War was of course, still fresh in everyone's minds, even for kids like me who saw the footage on TV.

I was going to say it must be after 1987 as that is when I got posted to WP, but I was on course at ITTS Hobby during 1983 so that is most probably when it is.
yeah, didn't the guy in the red shorts for a start, maybe a bit of man boob starting as well.

one means to say, that in regards to the era of the photos taken, that i would have possibly been one of the whippa snappas who one would quite often see running to a aircraft, depending on weither it was at either wigram or harewood in respects to when and what it was. Having been a child from the 80s and growing up in Canterbury with quite a few family and friends being associated at both airfields. Hope that sorts it?

From memory, there was something of a "thank you'' gesture in the visit in that the RNZN Comms center at Waioru had played a significant part in relaying essential communications from the UK to the RN ships in the South Atlantic. A little-known involvement of New Zealand in the Falklands War, although we also offered a frigate! The frigate didn't actually go to the Falklands, but to the east coast of Africa on the Beira Blockade, thus releasing a RN frigate which did go![to the Falklands].

Can anyone advise the dates of the Sea Harrier visit to Ohakea in 1983? I took some photos and I'd like to post them (when I find the negatives) but never thought to record the date down. Now many years later I don't have a clue!

NigeNige, Invincible did her antipodean victory lap in November-December 1983. I expect, as Mumbles wrote further up the thread, that it was the only visit by one of the RN carriers. They would have fallen foul of NZ's 1984 anti-nuke laws. They did make a few visits to Oz, though. phil82Beira Patrol ended in the mid-70s. The RNZN frigate relieved an RN ship on patrol in the Gulf. Of course, if Tony "Sniff" deigned to reappear on the forum, he could delight us all with his tales of whupping the poms' butts with A4s, but no, he had to leave us all!

They would have been RN Sea Harriers Dave not RAF Harriers.
