Sounds like a combined 617/627 squadron operation, so there would have been NZ aircrew from both squadrons. I would need to check logbooks .

Thanks Dave , we will all miss Keith , he certainly loved the Mosquito , enjoying his trips out to see Avspecs while his apartment was full of Mossie pictures and models . His car number plate was 109 SQ . Post war he trained as an engineer , manufacturing lighting standards where he became known as " Boles for Poles". A great sense of humour. A detailed obituary will appear in the NZBCA facebook page in a few days .

Baz you are very lucky. Up in the "Queen " city meeting up with mates for a few quiet ones needs 007 stealth. Sad really , we went for a Sunday drive along the whole Viaduct area , home to masses of bars , cafes etc . All we saw was a man and two dogs .Pleased I am not trying to pay the rent. So enjoy the beers and shout Don one from me .

Jimmy Sheddan scored a few , he told me that one he had fired he got down under the dash so the big engine in front took the shrapnel and not him , as quite a few pilots had been lost after knocking a V1 down .

The WN people were quite pedantic about detail and asked for close up photos of many internal details like the back of the control column and the hinge arrangements at its base. Taking these and others inside the Lancaster at MoTAT I found that I didnt know the aircraft that well after all.

With the kauri , by 1941 it was already in short supply and I have read that the Government gave special permission to cut out a preserved block to supply the timber.

One Kiwi pilot who was recognised was Arnold Diver DFM NZ414601 who flew Walrus with 273 squadron in the Med. He rescued a USAAF crew and could not take off again with the load. After many hours of taxiing they began to sink and were all finally rescued by a passing USN hospital ship . Arnold later flew with 487 squadron.

Like the current Public health orders giving the Government complete unrestricted control , so did the Commissioner of Works back then . They had the absolute right to take control of any materials, equipment and vehicles and to manpower the employees with compensation being sorted out later. I assume that these orders are still available in emergencies today, but its hard to image them being used while the 20,000 bureaucrats in Wellington " have" conversations " about human rights and personal freedoms while another 5000 PR blobs provide reports , with some answer that could be expected in 1946 . Just as well we were Governed by real people in those days other wise English would now be our third language.

That is sad, John's magazine was always looked forward to as its range of topics got me out of my particular aviation rut. Also there is now one less outlet for our aviation writers on subjects big and small , current and historical so this forum becomes even more important. Dave perhaps there is space now for a magazine section linked to the forum and add to your editorial duties.

Dave , in the new Corsair book there is a section on the cleaning up of lend lease equipment agrrements at the end of the war and balancing of the books.. It seems title was given to the NZG .

As we are all guessing , my thought is a large aircraft hitting the ground would have been heard by locals unless it was in a very remote area, and Riverhead really isnt that remote. Theres plenty of water around the west, so thats my guess. Just as cars have attractions to lampposts , so many aircraft have found water hard to resist , especially if there is nowhere else.
In looking for "lost " Corsairs , why have the RNZAF not rescued the one up in the Solomons ? Its position known and presumably is still NZG property.

Must try that , I can take video on my Nikon but recording stops as soon as the shutter is pressed to take a photo and then you need to restart video mode , and often a flat battery. I have a Panasonic video too , its a nice bit of kit , but I need a 2nd unit ( my wife ) to operate it at shows while I take stills . Sometimes , the director , does get the full co operation of unit 2 as they are easily distracted !

Good one Dave. I knew Jimmy well and he was a hard case till his last days. We had a common interest in brewing and gunpowder and at the end I took a bottle of dark ale into his ward most days , for medicinal purposes. Sad we have lost so many of these characters.

FLT LT Malcolm Flack 1607172 RAF , 77351 RNZAF on 20/8/21 in Auckland
Malcolm trained in UK and USA from 1943 as a pilot being posted to Transport Command after VE Day . In September 1955 he transferred to the RNZAF and flew Hastings with 40 squadron until August 1959. He attended a WONZ forum at Ardmore and visited the Hastings at MOtAT several times. Always happy to have a chat and share experiences, sadly missed.
