Australia to immediately begin the eventual full retirement of all its ANZAC Frigates and to acquire 11 new general-purpose frigates. (in addition to 6 [not 9] Hunter class]. The 11 new general purpose frigates will provide maritime and land strike, air defence and escort capabilities, according to information released by the government in a statement on 20 February.
The new general purpose frigates will be accelerated to replace the Anzac Class frigates commissioned in the 1990s and early 2000s, with planned transition capability assurance upgrades no longer required.I suspect - I do NOT know, this is what Wellington has been waiting to likely go public, with its own planning on?? - Thought, 11 + 4 makes 15 (they tell me) www.defenceconnect.com.au/naval/13646-australia-commits-to-modern-and-lethal-general-purpose-frigates#:~:text=The%20new%20general%20purpose%20frigates%20will%20be%20modern%2C%20capable%20and,Henderson%20precinct%20in%20Western%20Australia.

By requesting Bushmasters, Ukraine avoided the U.S. restrictions on arms sales and tapped into national pride in Australia. The situation is worth keeping an eye on for the future. If Ukraine requests additional vehicles, the Australian government will have to decide if they will foot the bill or not Very interesting points. You mention tapping into national pride but also tapping into an upcoming Aus election with national security a hot topic. Logistically I don’t see how a meaningful number of Bushmasters can be provided and as you say seems to be a very clever move to maybe prompt NATO to rethink providing armour/aircraft. Would have been interesting to see how a request for some of our Abrams tanks for example played out with our gov being so keen to help but not a big player in the scheme of things. Abrams wouldn't make a lot of [easy] sense, their a high-tech piece of kit, that would take some time to get UA tank crews up to speed on. Bushmasters are pretty right to go from the day they hit the ground. There's some talk the UK [and others] might be looking at heavy weapons, including tanks, but things get complex once you go down that road - the other key question now for Ukraine, is fuel supply!

So there's no chance the RAAF will dump them and sell them cheap to NZ any time soon then? They ain't no A4 Dave. Time will tell but I would wager that the colloquial nickname will change from Lightning to Dumbo. They ain't no "A4" - hope not, A4 wouldn't last to tea on the first day, in 2022!

Given recent global events, this must now be a serious topic for govt consideration. What's the likely best way forward?

The RAAF WILL buy these [or anything similar] going forward. I already sense the very real change of mood. We ARE now in a totally changed and dangerous world environment.

Best possible news....the Blackhawk and Apache deliver the goods and are another example of why Oz should never embrace "sexy platforms" that we have little to no engagement with. Buy Yank for combat proven capability!

I think what's got real interesting, is the not completely long-shot rumours the RAAF is going to line-up for the B-21 Raider. The rumours had a "passable, but debateable" level of substance to them.....after yesterday and the birth of AUUKUS, I suspect there'd be some smiling faces in the RAAF looking ahead to the 2nd half of this decade. If we could afford to buy one....we couldnt afford to operate it. I think more likely the fourth F.35 squadron may be created...resurrect No.78 please at Amberley Ha....compared to the subs, the Raider's a bargin!

A very smart move, the French deal was a dog - $40BN & years of delays when the threat from China is real here and now. It needed to be scrapped. Also pleased to hear Tomahawks for the Hobart class destroyers are being acquired and JASSM-ER (AGM-158B) for the RAAF to compliment the shorter range JASSM's already in service. As for commentary of NZ being 'left out in the cold' - what rubbish, there are alliances already in place and the deal was specific in its aims of introducing nuclear propulsion into the ADF for the first time. Comrade Clueless and her deluded 1980's response of "well they won't be able to come to NZ" says it all really Never felt happier about paying taxes than I do when I see good and progressive defence spending - and there will be more I think what's got real interesting, is the not completely long-shot rumours the RAAF is going to line-up for the B-21 Raider. May happen sooner than you think if the F35's keep being dogged by issues Every newgen plane gets accused of being dogged by issues! It's great column fodder for desk-bound journos!
