Apparently Aotearoa has a very significant mechanical issue due to contaminated fuel and the remedial work will be in the vicinity of $10 million to repair and have her tied up for quite some time. Does anyone have any details with regard to this? Given that this is our newest and largest vessel this seems quite extraordinary.

I understand that there has been a Leonardo AW159 Wildcat at Whenuapai this last week (a company demonstrator) and that it may have flown at the Wairarapa show last weekend. Has anyone seen it?

If you talk to anyone (of reasonable age) in the UK about Hillary and Everest they always say, 'he was part of Hunt's expedition wasn't he?'

I happened to be passing Whenuapai just as they were about to lift off at about 10.00am and was in almost the same spot just after 12 when they came back and flew over the base before landing. It was great to see them up together like that. I didn't think to take photos the first time but upon their return I did leap out of the car to snap away with my phone but the resulting pictures are rubbish so I apologise that I cannot present some here.

During the exercise Casper Weinberger, the US SecDef, came into Ohakea and went to Waiouru by Iroquois for a few hours and was taken out to the TOC (Tactical Operations Centre) a few k's north of the camp. For the boys in green it was quite an exercise given the large number of Aussie and US soldiers involved in the operational management side of things.

The aircraft did several loops around Whenuapai at around 11.00am this morning and then a 757 did some touch and goes at about 3.00pm so an interesting day at the base.

I would assume that NZ wanted something from the Irish, probably trade related as de Valera hated the British with a passion and as we know went to extreme lengths to get on with the Germans. It was he that sent the condolence card on behalf of Ireland when Hitler killed himself.

A P3 and a 757 did a low pass together over Whenuapai early this afternoon, a very cool look.

In Vietnam a NZ platoon was helicoptered to a VC camp with the intent of being dropped a few kilometres away and then approaching the camp. Other helicopters were flying around to obscure the sound of the landing choppers but unfortunately the American pilots got the locations wrong and landed the kiwis on the actual camp. The enemy fled leaving their breakfast still in the cooking pots so at least the kiwis enjoyed a hot meal from the action. They then departed the site to walk back to their own lines and after two hours of walking someone realized that they had not let two soldiers on sentry duty know that they had left. A squad was sent back with haste to the camp and found the two frightened but safe.

Have just seen them run up the harbour twice, very impressive! It has been an awfully long time since I have seen that in this country.

If you go onto the tvnz on demand site (via tvnz.co.nz) you can see the 'Duke' channel on that so can watch it from anywhere.

The UK is supplying 120 armoured vehicles along with other equipment. The vehicles will mainly be Mastiffs but there will be some tracked vehicles supplied as well.

Whilst I enjoyed seeing the formation I am worried that this is all that we can do for such an important moment in the history of the RNZAF. My fear is that there will never be a 100 year anniversary as the few aircraft surviving will be split between the other services to reduce the admin overhead that exists. I really think that this is now probable rather than possible, although I would love to be proved wrong.

The comments re the American statement remind me when I first visited the Pentagon back in about 2003. I was being taken along the ANZUS corridor which had an assortment of photos, storyboards, uniforms, weapons etc. relating to our past relationship which was pretty cool and was, I thought, very NZ heavy compared to the Australian content. As we walked along my escort said to me, 'Sir, this is when you were on our side', just had to chuckle. Otherwise though the people that I worked with there had enormous respect for our forces.
