This may help, i know that Gavin Grimmer from findlostaircraft.co.nz has an old map of the Atiamuri airfield in a old airforce training book, i know as i remember him showing it to me, it had co-ordinates and a sketch of the airfield plus an aerial photograph of it. I remember at the time he did a google earth search on it and it came up as being planted out in pines now..... maybe give him a yell, i'm sure he would copy you the page from his map book. grgrimmer@inhb.co.nz

ZK-CIA is gone from bridge pa, apparently it sold to a local guy for 1$ he had it lifted up to his farm below a helicopter and it was going to be turned into a chicken coop.... please no! let this not be true!

That photo overlay technique was certainly effective, I agree. It was interesting how little the landscape had changed in fifty years. I missed the first episode. I might have to watch it on On Demand. Yeah Dave, Its worth a look, they did the same photo overlay thing alot in the train accident eppisode, and all that is now there is a plain old railway embankment, then they would cross over to the same area in the 43 crash.......just total carnage. Amazing. I was impressed with Anton, he seemed very humble, he would call round to interview those affected by the crash, sit down with them, have a cup of tea, and just listen, let them tell the story. Looks like it will be a good series, i think Andrew Fagan will be in one eppisode on a ship wreck, that will be interesting as i have read about some of his mad solo sailing adventures........the sea is a nasty place.

Yep, very well made, i liked the way they overlaid the old photographs with new shots, that seemed to make things appear even more real and timeless.....Anton Oliver did a great job on the previous eppisode about the train accident too i thought.

Thats cool, a traffic jam on the auckland runway........we felt that earthquake even in Taupo, very slow sideways sway for about a minute, no sound, got the lights hanging from the ceiling going with a bit of a sway. Kids thought it was cool.

Hi garysoden Where are you located? Is the frame of HMP still with you? I am researching these 500s and their part in NZ helicopter history. Lyall Mudford was probably flying it for Eastern Bay Trappers or Lakeland Helicopters. Hi, yes the remains of ZK-HMP rest as a play hut for me kids down my driveway.......i will try to add some photos of it. What is left of HMP is pretty rough, i'd say it was a good smash back in 1979.....would love to see any photos of HMP in the deer reco days if anyone has some, i had a good look through the books...chopper boys and Helicopter hunters... but no photos of HMP

Thank you Bruce, I love the air to air photos of the bandits, very cool shots and a piece of NZ aviation history for sure. Am i right there are no bandits left flying in NZ now? I think the cityjet smiley logo on the tail was kinda forward thinking for the 1980s.....in a time when most airlines still had ya standard conservative style paint job.......a cartoon style smiley face was a bit outside the box.

Oh yeah the 500, sorry for the delay i've been off line for a long while, the 500 up the drive way is the remains of ZK-HMP......belonged to lyall mudford so i'm told......had a big deer hunting prang many a year ago so i am told. Will put up some photos soon, HMP is now a hut for the kids......i would love to see a photo of ZK-HMP from the deer recovery days, if anyone out there has one.

Poor old TZL ended her days at Hamilton airport as a fire rescue hull, after being vanderlised by kids, the fire guys felt a bit sorry for her and let me take her away, i parked her in a field at my farm and cleaned her up a fair bit. TZL has sinse moved back to Hamilton and is surposed to go on the roof of a new car museaum, near norton road...as a sort of display, don't know if this has happend yet, will check next time i,m up that way.

A few years back........on the quiet, ZK-CAW at macdonalds in Taupo was up for sale, the reason just quietly was although its a great icon for maccas and the town........the rateable area of land it occupies is hardly offset by the two or three kids a day that bother to climb up there to scoff a big mac. Its been there for years, and now its sitting on some prime bussiness realestate, so keep your ear to the ground......one day she may have to go.
