Hi all
I took a few, very short video clips at Warbirds on Parade 10/3/24. I have added some photos to give the video a tad more running time. It's always a trade-off when you are taking photos and video at the same time. I focused more on taking photos this time due to the excellent early morning light on the day. I was fortunate to get a few seconds of Warren taxing the Mosquito from Avspecs hangar to it's display location early the morning. A big thank you to the folks that organised the event.

Hi all. I would be interested to hear your views on the following:
The war in Ukraine is entering its seventh month. As an ex infantryman I have been thinking about several aspects of the military operational side of the conflict. The following caveat must be taken into consideration when reading my comments. I do not have in-depth knowledge of the military tactics used by the combatant forces in the present war as all the info at my disposal is sourced from public and social media and as we know both these media sources have their limitations.
Recent asymmetrical wars, those mostly involving western nations have seen the increased use and importance of special forces, specialised forces (not to be confused with actual special forces) and PMC Private Military Contractors. The increase and expanded use of PGM (Precision Guided Munitions) has also played a more prominent and significant role in the planning and execution of military operations during the past 30 years.
One of the factors behind the use of small/er but highly trained special forces and the use of PGM’s in all its forms has been the drive by governments and their military planners to limit the number of own force casualties on the battlefield. The number of active duty troops in most western countries have been declining steadily during the post Cold War era, notwithstanding the War on Terror (2001 - 2021)
The present war in the Ukraine seems to have refocused on the role of the PBI (Poor Bloody Infantry) Although PGM and special Forces have and are being employed by both sides in the conflict the role and importance of the grunt on the ground has once again risen to prominence. The old military doctrine that only the infantry can hold ground is being highlighted again in the mostly conventional war being waged by Russia against Ukraine.
Am I correct in my assumptions? Will this mean that western military forces will re-emphasise the mass use of long range artillery, mass use of armour and the expansion of large conventional infantry brigades. Will there be less of an emphasis on attack helicopters and close air support aircraft like the A10 and SU-25 on the conventional battlefield of tomorrow due to the preponderance of highly effective MANPADS. Are we going back to similar tactics most of the major combatants used in WW2?

Hi all The following are photos I took in South Africa at various airshows. Dave, I hope its OK if I add photos from SA airshows? The quality of the photos are not that good as they were all taken on print fil and then scanned in. Mirage IIICZ "Black Widow" taken SAAF 75 at Waterkloof AB 1995. The Mirage III's had been withdrawn from service at this stage. Denel kept one CZ and one BZ flying. The SAAF sold several Impala MK II's to the airforce of Gabon. Airforce of Zimbabwe - BAe Hawk T60. Waterkloof, Pretoria 2000. The Atlas C4M Kudu was used extensively during South Africa's Border War 1966 -1989. After being withdrawn from service several were sold to private individuals Rooivalk 670 Swartkops (Pretoria 1999) The need for an anti-armor helicopter became clear during the later years of the Bush War. By the time the Rooivalk became operational the war was over and the need for this type of helicopter became superfluous. The Rooivalk has see combat in central Africa recently.

Hi there 30sqnatc I am not sure if the following pics can help with your research as they are not RNZAF. I took both pics when I was still living in SA. The SAAF and SAA both used Lodestars during and after WWII. The top pic is actually a Ventura. I have added the pic here just in case it can be of help. Hi all
A few questions regarding the airshow.
1. Who was flying the Mustang on the day? If I remember correctly the announcer said it was not Graham Bethell but I can't remember who it was?
2. Why was Doug Brookers Spitfire not at the show? Is she in for maintenance?
3. Do we know what the reason was for Harvard 1078's (Yellow) left undercarriage not retracting when taking off?
Thank you in advance

Hi all
The last of my short vids I took at the Warbirds Open Day. Once again the clips are all ground shots but should give a good idea of the various types of fighter and training aircraft in the flying part of the show.

Hi all
The first of a few short videos I made on Sunday 18 November. Most are clips of the aircraft trundling past my vantage point. Good ground to air video was difficult with the overcast conditions. Fiddling between a 35mm and a video camera did not improve matters.
Errol you might recognise a familiar hat at 1:39. Are there any other forum members in the panning shot of the crowd?
