Believe the tape was made by Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing ( yip - 3M ) ... bit of aerodynamic benefit to covering up all openings. Interesting aircraft for sure - came from Nelson Wilson in Melbourne I think ( our Aussie friends will know the history ) ... and built up for the Museum....put a set of early exhausts on her, and would look great Cheers Hvd1041

Visited Maurice Hammond last year - very nice guy - don't know anyone else who has built & flys two P-51s - great home for the aircraft. Remember the aircraft well when Pete Coleman had it in Blenheim ... good to see it flying. Cheers Hvd1041

Hi Dave - just wonderful photos - just neat.
As a kid, a family friend was Gordon Leask - who had been an RNZAF Armorer up in the Islands and spent a lot of time on Rabaul at the end of the war 'cleaning' up the airfields. I assume dumping Japanese bombs etc ... took months he said, and they never did really do the job 100% - he said they were very keen to get home by that time.
He had a good old collection of Japanese rifles, pistols etc and a box of Jap aircraft instruments .. I've often wondered what happened to his haul after he died ( 20 years ago now ) ...nice guy - his party trick was riding a bicycle sitting on the handlebars peddling backwards.

Great thread Peter - and indeed one of the worlds best aviation museums - thank you Over the back of the airfield at Le Bourget are also the Musee de l'Air Workshops ( where the various new & redone display aircraft are worked on), the eclectic collection of aircraft of the 'Alies Anciennes' - here's a link www.wolverhamptonaviationgroup.co.uk/trip_paris-lebourget_dugny.htm but also the workshops of the group affiliated with the flying aircraft down at La Ferte Alais. Some of the guys work for the museum during the week and then continue on thru the weekend - a neat group. They don't really run tours, but have visited a couple of times over the years - always welcome and some neat machines being worked on - a couple of photos.

I think we should ask 'Curtiss' on here why NZ1052 is painted like it is. He built it after all - (and it is a lovely aircraft), hence the registration ZK-MJN.

Some pretty crazy / impractical ideas being put forth here ...I'd suggest for Basic training as much hands-on as possible is the only way to go; simple aircraft, complex aircraft - but basically as many aircraft as you can physically get your hands on to give you the wide range of skills required for a career in aircraft maintenance.
For subsequent training, aircraft type courses for example, most of the training now days is computer based but is always backed up with a module or two of hands-on training - nuts, bolts, plugs etc.
Type courses have changed over the years from 'talk & chalk' to 'computer based' but all have this hands-on element or a requirement to have worked on the aircraft over a period before or after the course. Never seen 'cardboard based' training - can't see it being much use.

PS - have LAME Licences in three countries & Qty 7 airline type ratings.

Yes - visited Cincinnati and the aircraft after Oshkosh this year...wing is progressing well and they should be flying later this year...stunning restoration.
I think the bit about it being flown by Fisken is an urban myth, that no-one has bothered to correct...but history on 2 OTU is enough for me.

Spent a couple of hours with Maurice Hammond in Norfolk last weekend...nice guy and had a good old look around his aircraft - two Mustangs ( 2427 being one ), Harvard, Auster, Stearman Gave him copies of the various 2427 photos on here and a link to this thread...but wondering if anyone else had any photos of 2427- perhaps at Omaka, or in Pete's shed, or maybe Wanaka ? This news just pisses me off ..... I work in MROs ( Maint Repair Organisations ) all over the place - currently in the Lufthansa facility in Manila - along with QANTAS A380s, Virgin Atlantic A340-600s, Lufthansa A340s / A330s; all late & all with quality problems.... and we need more & better maintenance slots; not these 'cheaper' MROs. Air NZ Auckland do a good quality job - competitive in all ways to any I've seen - and this sort of decision just smacks of short term thinking. They should be improving the facility to take in third party work - not farming it out to Singapore or China. Some non-technical bean counter has been drinking too much of the Koolaid....grrrr Link here to an article on some of the bigger players in the MRO market. aviationweek.com/mro/aviation-week-ranks-biggest-airframe-mros
