Many thanks, I'll use the group one which has Affleck standing alongside Gunn. How would you like me to credit the image in the article?. I've so far been unable to find a reasonably clear photo of T. P. (Buck) Ryan, so any help in that direction would be most welcome. Cheers, Errol Can you credit Mike McBey as the photo came to me from him originally. Thanks, Adam

They came from a family member - I have his contact details somewhere if you want to see if he has any more.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I wouldn't be surprised if your father was the last airman of 488 squadron.
Condolences to your family and my grateful thanks to your father for his service.

Hi,
There is a fairly recently created page on Facebook “RAF Bradwell Bay” that may be of interest to those researching RNZAF squadron’s who were based there during the war.

I have seen some log books from 488 squadron with A/C serials, and some with identifying letters. I love stumbling across the latter as it helps cross reference aircraft from photos and the ORB. Can’t seem to work out why each airman used a specific way of recording the A/C he flew in, so suspect it must have been personal preference?

Thanks Tim - your point inter helped me identify the relevant entry in the ORB. McIntyre was posted to Rolls Royce engine works on instructor duties on 24/04/43

I used the NZDF archive service last year and was amazed by the quality of information supplied at no cost. I even got an apology for the time it took them to process my request. The UK National Archive could learn a lot from the NZDF!

I used this service last year. Free, and I got sent a really comprehensive set of documents. The UK National Archives could learn a thing or two from NZDF!

I have just posted an updated Aircrew List to my blog at broodyswar.wordpress.com/488nz-squadron-research/488nz-squadron-aircrew/squadron-aircrew-list/This is the list that was fist put together by Graham Clayton as part of his reserch for his next book, which I have added to as time and success in gleaning new information allows. It would be great - if anyone has the time and inclination - for this resource to be reviewed by members of this forum to see if they can fill in any gaps. It is really Christian Names and Service numbers I am after. There may also be typos and errors that have slipped through my checks! This list has already proved a useful starting point for several people around the globe who are researching the participation of their relatives during the war which has become the new purpose of my site. Many thanks in advance. Adam

Errol - I agree. Reference to MT263 must be a typo in various publications. NT 263 was, as you say, allocated to 488.

Thanks peter - I think my list of 488 Squadron A/C is pretty good (https://broodyswar.wordpress.com/488nz-squadron-research/aircraft/). Add to that the lack of any reference to MT263 in the DH production lists and I think it is a typo in the book.
Your assistance is much appreciated.

Peter & Errol,
Thanks as ever for your useful replies. I have looked at the data from the 2nd TAF book but I can't tally MT263 with any aircraft operated by 488 Squadron. This serial is also absent from De Havilland production lists. Is this actually NT263?
While doing a couple of cross checks on the web this morning I discovered to my horror that I am guilty of poor editing in a post on the 12oclockhigh forums reference this A/C, swapping the N for an M. I am going to have to go and correct that now!!!

Hi Errol,
That is where my existing copy came from. I got the whole ORB on disc before they changed their pricing structure. There are a few blurry pages and typically one page that holds most of the info I need is unreadable! I suspect the answers will have to wait until I can get to Kew and see the original.
Cheers - Adam

Does anyone have access to a readable copy of 488 Squadron's ORB (Form 541) for December 1944? Mine is generally good quality, but the a few pages were blurred during the scanning process.
I am trying to cross reference claims against the aircraft flown as part of my ongoing work on the Squadron's Europe-based activities. I need to identify which A/C the following pilots flew on the dates listed.
Plt Off Knox - DO 217 Damaged on 06/10/42 Fg Off Stewart - JU 88 Destroyed on 23/12/44 Fg Off Stewart - JU 88 Destroyed on 23/12/44 Wg Cdr Watts - JU 188 Destroyed on 23/12/44 Flt Lt JAS Hall - ME 410 Destroyed on 23/12/44 Flt Lt Jeffs JU - 88 Damaged on 23/12/44
I have already looked at the Pilots Person Combat Reports for those I have but with no joy there.
Thanks in advance
Adam

Quite a find on eBay the other week - a 488(NZ) Squadron crest. It just arrived today, so I thought I'd share. The crest is hand carved out of wood and hand painted. No clue as to it's provenance, but it is a great addition to my collection.#

Dave - please do use it. Much better that it is in the public domain rather than sat in a box file in Somerset unread!
Perhaps if we post it far & wide enough we may discover the author.
