Yes, I can also remember the plane on the Onerahi waterfront and later dismantled and sitting in the southwest corner of the Whangarei dump for some years. It was kind of ironic given Pohe Island (the site of the dump) was Whangarei's original airfield.

I spotted the same truck driving through Otorohanga yesterday afternoon. Just like Dave's sister I first thought it part of a fixed wing aircraft. I thought it was perhaps the rear half of a Fletcher fuselage being relatively narrow but decided it was still too thin to be this. The registration then suggested it was part of helicopter which had me a little puzzled. Now after reading that HSF was a UH-1B and checking some photos, I'm now pretty certain it was the tail boom of this machine.

The aircraft was operated by the Northland Districts Aero Club for a wee while (under Executive Air Taxis) doing th WR-AA-WR scheduled service in the early 90s if my memory serves me right.
I believe she was directly imported from New Guinea.
Sad to hear she didn't last too long after that.

I'm sure the that the land concerned was significant to those that relied upon it for their daily existance - Maori, caucasian, settlers & farmers alike. Long before an aussie in a yank plane turned up.
