On Wednesday this week, the Hunter ZK-JIL was removed from hangar 3 and parked outside. What is the airworthiness status of ZK-JIL these days?

Note the article pic is a stock image of a French test as Mururoa The article doesn't mention the scorched paint on the Speedlight KC-135 from being a little too close Also worth noting that the Tsar Bomba was only ever a demonstration/propaganda exercise (in a russian tradition of creating massive but useless weapons e.g. the Tsar Cannon). It was too big to be used anywhere in Western Europe, and too heavy to be deployed anywhere else. The US never tested anything larger than 15 megatons, because they were confident in their designs ability to be scaled and never felt the need. Even at 50+ Megatons it is still overkill and couldn't do anything a smaller weapon couldn't - as far as is known the largest warheads fielded in the Cold War were 25-30 Megatons.

I like it. It makes a change from yet another 8th AF scheme at least.

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but earlier coverage of this aircraft suggested it was very unlikely to ever leave the Riverhead location. What changed?

F16's owned by the PAF are not Orion replacements. The F16s have now all been delivered to their true owners along with another dozen as well. The embargoed F-16's wound up going to the USN and USAF after the NZ lease was cancelled - they never made it to Pakistan.

It makes me wonder what on earth is so important about Antarctica. Surely a few scientists looking at the weather is not all that is happening down there. You're right, it isn't for a few bearded boffins to tell us the ice is melting a bit

Not Whenuapai at full load! My mistake, I thought a USN P-8 had already been through Whenuapai

The Aussie P-8 (just one delivered so far according to ADF Serials) visited AKL today (I think). /photo/1 Not P-3 related, but these have made a big impression on chemtrail conspiracy believers in Australia. It looks like an airliner, but is covered in suspicious pods and bumps, has a curious circle insignia that doesn't belong to any airline (these people are seriously that inept that they don't recognise RAAF roundels), so is obviously operated by "them"

You can of course do it but there will be a cost. A third problem is unlike the P3 you can only operate off a long runway which can easily use airports like Greymouth or Kaitaia. When (if ever) have RNZAF P-3's ever operated out of those or other regional locations? They have been to Invercargill in recent times but that's about it as far as I am aware, and the P-3K2 is itself limited by weight as to which strips in NZ it can use. At full load you are talking about Christchurch, Mangere and maybe Ohakea. Or Whenuapai even.

Errol, you must have been standing right next to me; I was precariously balancing on the trig railing. In that case I think you were standing right next to me - I was balancing on the other corner of the trig! I was on the fence-post! A view of some Frecklingham avgeeks, link only so as to not visually clutter the thread. flic.kr/p/Sagn9GI can see my car in that pic but not me

Great shots Sam. Like that one with the GoPro being removed. Hope the footage gets released .. the RAAF has lately done that for a few displays eg Bathurst. I noticed the F16 pilot fitting one too on Saturday at Avalon...that hornet vapour shot is great too. I spoke to that pilot on Saturday he said that's called squatting the jet when it tail slides like that. Thank you The squat is a great move, nice and noisy and close to the crowd, and easy to anticipate if you know the routine (or notice the smoke disappear as the throttles go forward). It's just a pity the cloud turning up at the wrong time greyed things out a bit I agree the footage would be cool to see. Nice to know whatever suction they are using is rated for 7G+ too

Great shots Mr Hall. was wondering if you had any static shots of the NH90 that had the external fuel tanks fitted. Haven't seen any flying here with them on. It won't be as good as Sam's (taken with my vidcam) but it may be of help. Well, you might think that, but despite walking past the beast twice and noting the tanks both times I didn't take any photos of it - 8 year old daughter on a mission to get all the squadron stamps (great idea by the organisers by the way, along with the shade tents) took priority Thanks anyway for your estimation in anticipation

Very nice shots Sam, I think we must have been standing a few feet apart for a while there! We could have had a WONZ reunion at the end of Frecklingtons Rd on Friday afternoon for sure! A couple of my efforts. Thankyou and likewise, your shots are spectacular - what gear are you using? By my estimation there are at least four WONZ members in this thread alone who were at Frecklington Rd on Friday, but only ErrolC and I recognised each other Alas I couldn't stay until the F-16's arrived.

Anyone else notice the BK117 arriving in the middle of the Texan solo display on Saturday? Seemed a little unorthodox. . . IMG_2914p by Sam Hall, on Flickr
