Quite how the Vildebeest snuck onto that list is a bit of a mystery Sometimes bigger is better. Like Freddy Mercury sang - fat bottom girls make the rockin world go round.

Looks like an episode of Mythbusters. Glad the pilot was okay. Definitely buy a lottery ticket after that double whammy.

Zac if you are going to stand there coughing all over the place, you'd better get tested. Avgeek variant? Or is it just a bad case of Fletcheritis?

After to the Gladiator, Avia 534, Bucker Jungmann and Vildebeest, it would have to rate as the next attractive WW2 biplane. *cough* Polikarpov I-153 *cough* Agreed. Utilitarian, but still a good looking bus.

Apparently the engine piping installation was a nightmare and took way longer than anticipated - that and covid.
Like the G.91. There are many worse looking aircraft out there. Mostly Russian.

I have an idea. I'd really love to see a bronze statue depicting Mark Hanna and Ray Hanna erected at Duxford. I reckon crowdfunding and perhaps sponsorship could make it happen. Perhaps they could be depicted like they have just finished a flight together, they are smiling and discussing the flight, with the typical fighter pilot hand gestures. What do people think? They really were latter day pioneers in that era of aviation and should be recognised for their talent, commitment and professionalism as aviators. Their influence made huge gains for the worldwide warbird movement. Great idea Dave.

Guido was such a great pilot and fantastic to any who approached him. Met him a a few occasions and was very giving of his time to a young avgeek. His aircraft collection was brilliant as well. The G.59 was a favourite of mine in the 90's warbird scene but I must say 'Ciao Bella' was better in polish than camo. If I get time I will dig out my photos and add to the thread.

Definitely think the Ha 1109 looks better than the Merlin Buchon. Not a fan of the four blade prop either. It's got a more businesslike front, hasn't it and it looks more like a Bf 109 despite the upright engine. RAFM 112 Be hard pressed to spot the difference at first glance. Looks more like the thoroughbred than the clunky Buchon truck.

It didn't help Young Zac that in the Warbirds Over Wanaka 1992 videos G-BOML was referred to as an Me109J. But I agree: 109s is 109s and Buchons is Buchons! And I love Buchons!! Yup, I get it, but all I see is Messerschmitts. I guess it stems from the Battle of Britain movie and the fact that so much of the type's characteristics comes from the Bf 109 as I pointed out earlier. One thing that is readily apparent is that of the surviving Buchons around the world, there are more that are converted into or dressed to look like Bf 109s than there are examples configured as Buchons as the Spanish intended. I do like the blue colour scheme the Ejercito put on theirs. Definitely think the Ha 1109 looks better than the Merlin Buchon. Not a fan of the four blade prop either. I guess some derivatives can look better or worse for their attempts at improvement, like the great T6 / CAC16 debate (for the record distinctly different aircraft that share aesthetics and a centre section - the Wirraway being the obvious clear winner on all counts π).

May be wrong but I believe Ross (Vintage Fighter Restorations) has two maybe three MkVs. Robert Eastgate has also passed away. Interesting on the status of his Spits, CA18 and Winjeels.

Bugger. Missed it due to Covid booster vax and getting my dates mixed up. Sounds like it went well Dave. Looking forward to the recording. Merry Christmas to you and all Forum Members.

So is a P47 but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. P.S. I like the Buchon - just don't call it a Bf109

Does anyone know the RAAF serial for this P40? The inclusion of "A29-90" in the thread title makes me think it's A29-90 Yeah π. Just scroll down don't read. Thanks Zac.

I remain to be convinced they will not be Australia's biggest defence white elephant. Along with the Spartans, Taiwan's and numerous Army and Navy projects, we seem to be purchasing based on romantic notions, not practical solutions. I share your dislike of the machine. The concept of essentially one aircraft for conventional, carrier and VSTOL operation was flawed and has both compromised the performance of resulting aircraft and made it far from the cheap mass produced fighter that was imagined. itβs an amazing engineering achievement β but itβs far from the aeroplane it should have been and excels at a limited set of capabilities The USAF is well aware this is not the aircraft it had hoped but has boxed itself into a corner by planning to buy over 1700 airframes and is pretty desperate to wriggle out of this β Partly with the F-15EX and also trying to speed the next generation of fighter into service. But the F-35 it is cleaning up on sales around the world. Why? Itβs the only 5th generation, stealth fighter available β if you want to be flying and fighting over hostile territory on day 1 this is the aeroplane to buy. I guess the reason sales are so good is there is no other Western 5th Generation 'Fighter' on the market. The Griphen is an immensely capable platform but only 4th Gen as is the new Hornet. The Eurofighter and Rafael are better option but still miss our needs. My big question over the F35 is its combat readiness percentage which is woefully low. The Russian and Chinese aircraft are better in their designated roles but obvious questions remain over their quality.

Except for the F35. No proven capability yet. You are a couple of years out of date! I remain to be convinced they will not be Australia's biggest defence white elephant.
