I see from the rear cover of the latest CAA "Vector" magazine that on 30 January, the RNZAF are doing flying displays in Auckland and Hamilton:
"RNZAF Auckland Harbour Air Show 30 January 2011"
"Hamilton. RNZAF Air Display 30 January 2011"
Maybe someone has some inside track as to what the composition will be?

Regarding the collision on the tarmac at Mangere:
My recollection is that the tractor was being driven by Chas Hurst, an ex-UK, former NZAIL CT4 production line employee and one-time Cambridge resident.

I just remembered! I joined the mob in 1962 (BES19) and there was Colin Simmons amongst us. He re-mustered to aircrew, probably about 1963 and was flying B170's. I encountered him only once after Woodbourne, that being at Ohakea in '63 or '64 when he was piloting through. Does anybody know what happened to Colin Simmons?

In Hamilton, James Aviation had ZK-HLU ("LULU") from new for many years.
It did some ag work locally, was a development platform for many JAL modifications and accessories, and did quite a lot of HT powerline stringing between many of those pylons you see from the Auckland motorway.
It also served as one of the early air ambulances in Auckland (from a JAL base at Ardmore), did several seasons as the Piha Rescue helicopter and serviced the batteries on many of the off-shore unmanned lighthouses, including right up at the Three Kings Islands.
I did quite a bit of work on HLU including electrical mods and a couple of field trips to get it mobile after suffering electrical component failures (one at Piha and one at Cape Reinga). Not due to our mods I hasten to add!
I do not remember what became of it after JAL ownership.
On another note, good to see bobgod is still extant, but God knows why he chooses to live down there!

I remember the JAL 25 year anniversary, though it was 5 years before I joined them. I was at NZAIL at the time and there was a vast amount of flying done at JAL that week. The air-to-air and air-to-ground filming was done by a cameraman sitting on a specially-constructed seat mounted on the side of a Hiller UH12E (not in the bubble). To film the streaming take-off of the JAL fleet, the Hiller buddied each aircraft taking off, then sped back down to the next in line, performing a series of long elipses. Alas, I missed the programme and a chance to see the film again.
In later years when I was at JAL, they had a considerable film library and the RAeS used the JAL cafeteria for many years for meetings. We had the use of the JAL 16mm projector, and I was one of the projectionists for some years along with Albert Randall. When JAL was finally wound down and purchased by PAC, I tried to find out what happened to the JAL projector and the film library to no avail.
At one stage, all that sort of stuff went up to the former JAL subsidiary, Avcorp at Ardmore and I don't think it ever came back to Hamilton. I have strong reasons to believe that the gear was "taken into care" by one of the Avcorp directors or a senior manager, as everyone went quiet and I could not get any traction on enquiries.
There is a possibility that since that since that time in the mid-eighties, someone may have passed the archive on to someone who cares ......... Does any ex JAL member know any more about this topic?

Although you don't say what material it is made of, it looks to me like an engraved decal of "Trefoilite", that three layer hard plastic material that was once so commonly used. It could be that a previous owner of your house was an engraver or worked for an engraver. The spelling mistake could account for it never being fitted to an aircraft. It might be a production defect piece of scrap. The homeowner was probably using it to scrape patches of moss or algae off the roof without damaging the paint (as you do). One edge looks a bit worn in that regard.
When I was in the industry it was very common for aircraft manufacturers and maintenance facilities to get the local engraver to make up decals. Mistakes were often made, not always at the engravers. I have seen the decal drawings come out of the drawing office with spelling errors!

There was a Yeoman Cropmaster based at Hamilton for many years belonging to Haynes Engineering of Horotiu (Ivan Haynes). It was a Lycoming 0540 powered machine with a Harvard type canopy and a rear-facing passenger seat. I had worked on it a few times; minor ignition system and electrical components repairs. I do not recall the rego, but it is bound to be somewhere else in the forum.
