A good excuse for a long weekend away. My partner and I grabbed a motel on the beach 6 weeks ago... nice to have a weekend away anyway. Driving from Hamilton - thanks to the closing of the Kopu-Hikuwai Road, the quickest way is via Coromandel lol.

Approx 50 aircraft and over 70 guests. We had a ball... my partner and I had designed and built 300g bombs for the competition - made skinny enough to fit through the window air-vents of many of them. Note for us... next time we use stronger ribbons for the bomb tails so those that choose to hold the bomb by the tail dangling out the window in the wind won't prematurely drop them in the corn field 200m short... At least they got to take a ribbon home! Thanks to those that joined us for the weekend from across the country.

I went down to the Stratford fly-in by car. I spent a good chunk of Saturday chatting with the Stratty group, being an ex-member from the late 80's. My partner and I are considering a plane and Kenny was enjoying showing us his plane... and why I need one like his lol. I spent some time on the ground with him in his machine, new motor purring away. Such a nice guy. As of that Saturday, they were waiting for paperwork for the new engine install. Fly high mate...

I saw it too. Very crappy. I've seen a replay of the incident and I suspect there will be no clear indication of the cause - although it does look like a fully-stalled left wing after getting in jetwash. Perplexing... and tragic.

I used WAM on Sunday for the final video fly-over of the new Hamilton Expressway. I've developed a way to to create footage that doesn't need a heli... or the expense of one (or hard-mounting certified paperwork) Feeling rather fortunate as I had it booked for Wednesday but a cheeky call to the charter pilot Sunday morning got the job completed on Sunday. Much relief with the only other C172 with 135 charter authorisation at Waikato Aviation was JPG and it's in the shop getting an engine rebuild.

Two shows ago I was invited by my ex-neighbour to sit on their Loyd carrier and do a lap with them - along the back of the field during the display. Being 'just' below the Al Deere spitty at the end of it's run as well as the jets. Camera in hand, grabbing all I could from this unique position. So damn cool... despite the sweltering heat. Looking forward to getting back there (I hope)

The "Cinejet" in the behind-the-scenes was being tested at Reno in Sept. A camera system developed by Shotover, they were testing their "K1" it on the front of the L39. They were going for certification for 350Kts but hoped to go faster. An awesome piece of kit... I admit to drooling lol.
I can't wait for this.........

I went to the Reno Air Races in Sept this year... and had a beer with the civilian instructor that's getting all the cast g-limits up in his Extra-300L. There will be no faking the facial expressions with G in this movie! Very very cool! He commented that the cast feedback so far was that the sustained g in the Extra300 felt greater than the jet.
So looking forward to this... even if it is a 'Tom Cruise movie' lol

Why not fly the drone from the Archer and get the best of both worlds? fair question lol Because even with flaps-down, it's a bit too much of a struggle to keep up... but I do love a challenge. Easier flying the drone from a convertible... certainly when it comes to stopping and changing batteries!

Thank you muchly - from my team mate FOV and cameras... I've had NZTA arguing that I used one of my drones for a shoot instead of the fullsize aircraft a few times with my road construction shoots. Quite entertaining! For the record, Piper Archer, no door, usually height of 500'. Add a 24-240 lens and not only can you count bolts on a bridge, you can make it look like any altitude

Team... questioning for a work mate. Much debate about where this photo was taken. We have seen it on various history sites but it never states where!

The audio interview was very good. 50% of the worlds airline flights are under 500 miles. This company's majority of flights are under 1 hour. There is a place for this - especially considering the noise reduction and the increasing number of audio-pollution-precious people out there.

It was very very gusty at Reno on Monday. I arrived back late last night from there. The weather went from glorious sun with sod-all wind most of the week to snow on the hills Monday morning - which was when he busted the plane.

A pity there will not be the Kiwi team to photograph this year. Sore point lol. When we booked the tickets, the tour promoter said they were! Iām pretty sure we will enjoy anyway. Two blokes in Reno... wives at home. What can go wrong??? I do however have the Kiwi team shirt and hat - so virtually there!

Something like a 30l daypack will be fine, subject to passing the security inspection. Larger packs, with an internal frame, will be a problem. What they are more concerned with are wheelie bags and hard camera cases that pros use to move lots of gear safely. Remember that you have booked a seat in the stand, and that does not include storage space for your luggage. If the stands fill up you can expect to have your bag in your lap or at your feet, so plan accordingly. Fantastic - thanks Brett. It's smaller than 30L and no internal frame - and it will fit between my legs once the 200-600 comes out. I've been careful to get a side-seat above the staircase (no seats in front) to minimise the disruption to others... because I care So looking fwd to some warm wx lol

Hi team
I'm off to Reno in 3 weeks (woohoo) and I'm taking my camera kit. I have reserved stand seating and I've read this on the FAQ:
"Can I bring a backpack?
There is a bag check at the ticket gates and all bags, persons, vehicles, etc. are subject to search. For example, camera bags and day packs are OK, but large backpacks and large camera bags are not"
Well what defines a 'large backpack or large camera bag"? Let's face it... the average US traveler thinks it's ok to not checkin a huge suitcase and they force it in the overhead locker on the plane!!! My camera-bag isn't huge but it's not exactly small lol. Any user-experiences here???
Ta
Pete

The fact that thee was no evidence of a broken drone in or about the plane kind of immediately alerted most that it was not a drone... We know that... but the international damage that keeps occurring to 'drones' in the (uneducated) public masses by people that can't tell the difference between plastic bags and UV degradation and drones... It's no wonder that I have less paperwork and insurance cost hanging out of a doorless PA28 than I do when I try to use a 320 gram drone full of safety features. Sorry - I'll crawl back under my rock.
