A long time coming but is it Ginna Max or similar on the towbar, Don't know the driver but i think he was a MT person. The Wasp does not have brakes, only wheel locks which could be a bit vicious if used. No WOF or REGO either

The driver was MT - long term driver at Whenuapai.

An ex Kiwi Wasp is scheduled to appear at the Ragley Hall Midlands Air Festival over this weekend in UK. The place is huge. They marked out as runway on the side lawn yesterday and I swear that it would taske a Lanc or B.17. The place is huge. Balloon 'Niteglow' tonight with between 85 and 100 balloons expected including "Iwi the Kiwi".

Hi All, this is my first post here but I have been using the form for a while now.
I am about to start a 1/48 RNZN Wasp however have not been able to find any reference as to what colour it was painted for its final scheme. Does anyone know what the paint colour/code was?
Thanks in advance! -Wheels

Painted a few of them back in the day, RAF Blue Grey rings a bell and looks right to me on websites - BS381C:633, overall colour of FAA’s Sea King HAS.5, Sea King HAS.2 and Wasp HAS.1 anti-submarine helicopters. hataka-hobby.com/products/raf-blue-grey-bs381c633/An email to the RNZAF museum would help confirm.

The markings on the nose of NZ3908 indicate it was from HMNZS Waikato The F11 marking indicates it is from the commanding ship of Frigate Squadron 11 (The RNZN Leander group) HMNZS Waikato's Wasps carried two side door markings - initially 430, then after it was found that that number was already allocated to an RN frigate, the number was changed to 420. These number could only be seen if the doors were fitted. It should be noted that that number belonged to the ship and not the aircraft so if a Wasp was rotated then the new replacement carried those doors with the side number, and the nose panel was also changed to reflect the ship

Did the doors get removed depending on the mission? What missions did they have to be removed for? Winching?
Would they sometimes fly with different configurations such as rear doors off and front on, or one side on and one side off?
And without the doors was it a whole lot windier and noisier inside for the crew and passengers?

I think they were removed for afloat operations to assist egress in a ditching.

As Don has said doors were removed for afloat operations. You will notice the flotation bags above the main cabin. When ditched these bags inflated and would have made opening the main cabin doors very difficult. As it was the crewman or passengers in the back had to dive under the bags to get clear of the aircraft. See photograph of NZ3901 in the water on page 180 of SEEK AND DESTROY

A very interesting thread with some lovely photographs!
Last year whilst in New Zealand I visited the Navy Museum at Devonport, Auckland. I was hoping to see NZ3902 but it was not on display. Nobody in the Museum knew anything about it. I emailed the Museum last year but again no luck. I have also filled out a contact form to the Navy but again no luck as yet.
Does anyone on the group know the current location of the Wasp, I'm guessing the Naval Yard at Devonport. Would anyone know somebody I can contact to gain permission to see it?
Thanks in advance,
Tim.

The final active Wasp with the RNZN arrived here as XT782 in 1983 as an intended parts source. In 1994 it was rebuilt to a serviceable standard using components from NZ3901 and NZ3904 to become NZ3909, flying in July 1994. I don't have a photo of this one After 12 years of waiting I finally have a photo of NZ3909, courtesy of Bruce Gavin. Location obviously Tauranga.

I again had the pleasure and privilege of commentating on Terry "Doc" Martin's wonderful Wasp XT787 - ex NZ3905 - at Ragley Hall, UK for the Midlands Air Festival. Wonderful machine and display. Wearing the markings of a Wasp operating from HMS Endurance during the Falklands Campaign.....particularly relevant this year being the 40th Anniversary of the Falklands action.

I've just finished reading "the Royal Navy Wasp" by Larry Jeram-Croft and Terry Martin, published by Pen and Sword in 2018. Good coverage of the NZ Wasps, and even includes a quote from me that appears earlier in this thread referring to the ditching of NZ3903. A well written account of an interesting little aircraft.

If I remember correctly, Cris co-authored an article on the Wasp with Dick London that appeared in NZ Wings.

Folks, I am in contact tonight with Terry "Doc" Martin. He has copies of his book available and their sale supports the ongoing flight of his Wasp for Navy Wings. If anyone is interested I shall post his address so that interested parties can make contact and obtain a copy. Great cause especially for an ex-Kiwi Wasp !
