The Aussies seem to have perfected the submarine version. ;D A skill later used to good effect publicly with an F-111 and America's Cup yacht ;D Sorry to our Australian friends, couldn't resist.

Neat photos Bruce. It is neat to see the engine change in progress on Coolangatta.
How did that guy get a golf club past Air Security? ;D Imagine what would happen if someone really tried putting a golfball in an airliner these days. Of course these publicity shots show average middle class people with their families but in reality the customers were generally the elite rich and the taxpayer funded politicians, a bit like First Class now.
Is it my imagination or is Africa all out of proportion on that map? it looks too big compared with India.
Is Cooee an actual place? Or has Qantas just used that name to make it seem more friendly?

I love those photographs of S.878/VH-ABF undergoing maintenance on the hard with engineers swarming all over it, and with the chap with the two kids standing there observing what is going on - today's OSH laws would definitely ban that!
I'm at work now, but sometime over the weekend (perhaps even after I get home late tonight), I'll post some photos of the TEAL Empire 'boats, including photos taken during their early identity crisis. One of the photographs even shows S.884 carrying the name Aotearoa, but the registration ZK-AMC. Another photo shows S.886 carrying the registration ZK-AMA and the name Ao-tea-roa. S.884 eventually became -AMC Awarua, while S.886 became -AMA Aotearoa.

There's an article in an old New Zealand Wings detailing and explaining the anomaly of the registrations on our two Empires. NZ was meant to get a third one, ZK-AMB too but it never happened.

Bruce, thank you so much for posting these images from a time when long distance air travel to this part of the world was so different from today. These are fantastic shots.

Is it my imagination or is Africa all out of proportion on that map? it looks too big compared with India. Dave your imagination is working just fine, and there's no need for alarm. That whole map is way out of scale! Food in the first sequence of pics looks a bit yummilicious, I must say.

Yeah, but the earth was flat back then, so that's why everything is out of scale.
