Referring Thomarse's post on 25/11/09; the letter Q is in use on New Zealand motor vehicles. The four excluded letters are I, O, V and X. The exception being when those letters are requested on a personalised plate.
NZ plates were definitely issued starting with I, here's proof: A high school friend of mine used to drive a brown 1979 Galant with the plate IZxxxx. It looked almost as bad as the car above but was roadworthy.

NZ plates were definitely issued starting with I, here's proof: I had cars with rego's of JIxxxx and LQxxxx. I can also remember seeing cars with regos starting with I and O. I also remember that Q was skipped and I don't remember seeing those letters being used since that time. So I suspect these numbers stopped being used when the decision was made to skip the Q's. Anyway, back to the main subject......

Interesting discussion...reminds me of that scene from the 1980 movie Airplane!...which probably explains why V Victor is not used for aircraft registrations!
As for motor vehicles...think it was registrations BEGINNING with Q and V that were not used, plus various "offensive" combinations including quite a few beginning with F.

I should qualify my comment regarding V Victor by saying - not many aircraft regos beginning with V!

FCQ was definitely a 'Q' branch plane ! - a C152 between ruffly 1982 to 1984 my log says I flew with intrepid Napier instructors J Fulton - A Baig - G Peacock & G Urquart ..........and solo time The letter Q has always been available as a second or third letter. For example; ZK-AAQ was a Bluebird registered in 1929 and ZK-AQA is a Tiger Moth registered in 1947. The thread concerns non-use of Q as the first letter making the QAA - QZZ unavailable.
