I remember reading in a local aviation mag a few years ago that there were a few being restored near Auckland. Is the OFMC aircraft still in NZ?

I've always liked the Stearman. Sort of reminds me of a Biplane version of the T6/Harvard. I think the T6 was the next step in training after the Stearman wasn't it? At least for the USAAC/US Navy?

Yes. The Stearman provided both initial and intermediate training and the Harvard was then the advanced trainer. Some however began on Cornells and then the Stearman.

I had to look up Cornell. AKA PT19. I had a wire controlled PT19 as a kid with a little Cox engine in it. Lots of fun.

The way I flew it I am thinking perhaps a Stuka would have been more appropriate! ;D

Thanks! Tony landed and motioned for me to leap in the front. No helmet or hearing protection so the old ears were ringing for a bit, but that just added to the "ambience" Sadly the photo's were taken quickly without too much time to check camera settings, hence slightly blurred at a distance, but I love the colours..

Tony's strip is great as well isnt it. I flew Tony's Stearman a few times from his place and must say its a fun wee machine. I'm suprised youre not permanently deaf as that 450hp P&W sure makes some noise.

I should have grabbed some ear muffs or a headset I guess but didn't have time. Still, fingers in the ears on takeoff sufficed.
I must be a bit weird like that...My first flight in a Fletcher (BXQ) I left the earmuffs off to experience "the noise". Rest assured I only did that once!

It's been a wee while since this thread was active, and Stearmans seem (to me at least) to me more regular attendees at events across the country.
How about some more recent photos? Embarrassingly I seem to have no Stearman photos of my own to share. Nice one, Zac. But what I can do is a quick census of the type thanks to the CAA site (locations are the addresses listed on the site):

Somewhere I think I have heard reference to a couple of American registered Stearmans in the Waimate area. Can anyone elaborate?

ZK-RJS is being restored at Ardmore's Area 59 by Russel Jenkins. It's looking so nice, I cannot wait till he rolls it out.

Can anyone remember the Stearman that operated out of Wigram in the late 90's that ran joyflights?
