A Christmas present from Mumbles was a brand new, reincarnated , Airfix kit of a Canberra B8 of the RAF, but with the option of making it 06 of 14 Sqn, with all the appropriate decals. It's a beauty! It's also engineered in China, so everything will fit! ;D ;D
He promptly took it back again, because he will be assembling it, with far greater skill than I. I'm rapt!

Now he [Mumbles} won't tell you himself, because he's not into blowing his own trumpet ,so to speak,but I'm his Dad so I can do a bit of blowing. What he hasn't mentioned is that he has a number of awards for his modelling but it turns out that in addition to picking up the prize for best New Zealand aircraft at the internal club competition, he had also won one of the half dozen or so prestige / actual trophy awards, the one for best New Zealand subject in any category. He couldn't remember what it looked like, so was a bit surprised when he turned up at his mates place to collect, and he walked out with a handful of certificates and one of the biggest pieces of pounamu / greenstone he has seen outside of a museum: With his name engraved on the side even. He'll have to give it back next year, but until then it is on display at home!

I've just bought one of these kits myself so will be interested to hear/see how Mumbles progresses with Phil's one.
I'm not that familiar with the Canberra so any hints on things wrong with the Airfix kit or that need changing to turn it into our B(I)12 version would be appreciated.

I have a Hunter FGA9 in a glass case presented to me by Mumbles, and it is a stunner for detail. I fully expect the Canberra to be better! The Hunter was done because I had a direct connection with the aircraft, which is "J_ Juliet" of 208 sqn whi damaged a starboard undercarriage leg at Nairobi Airport, and a couple of us went over with the lineys to help defuel it. I have a photo of the incident somewhere. When this model was last displayed it got a "Highly Commended"! That be me in the photo! Ahhhh...sweet nostalgia And the Model.. and before any eagle-eyed spotter tells me, it is Q-Queenie on the Rudder, because the kit represents the same aircraft that was J on 208, but when it had been transferred to Aden as a part of the composite 8/208 squadron.

I have thought about buying the new 1:72 Canberra from Airfix to do as a Kiwi machine...I don't fancy this variant as much as the B.2/T-series, but its a cool aeroplane I'd love to have in the collection.

Finally made a start on this and have something to show. This will be a straight out of the box build, using the kit decals for the most part (I may replace the roundels). One of the kit options is for a 14 Sqn aircraft c. 1968 which makes things a lot easier. Here is what is in the box: I'm not sure what external differences there might be between an RAF B(I).8 and an RNZAF B(I).12 but as far as I can tell everything is there to build a 12 out of the box (the options given are RAF, RNZAF and SAAF). Weapons included are 1000lb bombs, SNEB rocket pods, and AS.30 ASM's (RAF only). Current plan is to put some 1000lb'ers in the open bomb bay with the RP's under the wing as a representative load. This is the first of the new generation Airfix kits I have built, and I like what I see. so far. First thing to to is fix the rudder. I don't know what Airfix were thinking when they moulded this, but I haven't seen these horizontal lines on any Canberra rudder: Filled and looking much better (still some tidying to do): More pics to come as progress happens.

Various things have been keeping me away from the bench lately, but I have made some progress: Completed cockpit assembly, coloured by Henry Ford. Complicated little subassembly this one. The fuselage decking insert around the canopy isn't that good a fit, so I added a couple of tabs from sheet plastic for support (in white). Airframe dry fit, suddenly looking like a Canberra. A little bit of warp to deal with in the fuselage halves, but nothing too terrible. A lot of nose weight added to not a very big space. Cut down fishing weights aren't as efficient as other methods but they get the job done. I might chuck some more lead in the front of the engine nacelles as I'm not certain there is enough here. 47g weighed out against the recommended 45g, but the distribution is clearly not ideal! Nav also happily installed. And airframe assembled. Major component fit is pretty good apart from the aformentioned upper fuselage insert.

I haven't had time for a lot of modelling lately, but have returned to this recently and made good progress. The model has now been puttied and sanded, most of the puttying and sanding directed at the 'I'm a secret Matchbox/Corgi prototype" fuselage panel lines, which are nowhere near as visible on the real thing as the mouldings would have you believe: It's now not that far away from being ready for paint. Also I have reprofiled the lower part of the fin leading edge to more closely resemble the original

Thanks Dave. Bit more progress since last time. Airframe fully assembled and primered: DSG applied. I liked the look of the overall grey and was briefly tempted to do a what-if low vis RNZAF Canberra: Green for all your disruptive needs: And Hi-Speed silver underneath to make it go faster: Anyone know what colour the 1000lb bombs we would have used were?

Wings magazine had a full page colour photo (inside the rear cover) of a Canberra with all it's assorted armanent loads arranged out in front of it, that should give you all the info.
From what I can see it appears Airfix didn't mould the speed brakes on the wing?

Thanks guys Shorty, there is a representation of the speed brakes, but there aren't enough of them and they aren't quite in the right place if thats what they are. Thanks for the pics Don thats exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Looks like blue/green for the casing and dark green/black for the tail. Interesting to note there are two different bomb fin configurations in the pictures. Anyone know more?

Blue bombs could mean they are just practice (concrete filled). The real HE ones might have been a different colour? That was certainly how it was with Skyhawk bombs.

Live ones were dark green as far as I can tell. Will probably go with dark green casings and black tail sections as a representative load unless anyone says different.
