This is fascinating Ben and I'd not heard that rumour. I went to the Warbirds Information Exchange forum just now and forum member "Dan Newcomb", from the Commemorative Air Force's Southern California wing has posted this: "It is my understanding that our Zero will be shipped to New Zealand next month to participate in an air show. We will send a crew and will fly an aerobatic routine. The Zeke will be back in the States in April. I will keep you posted." According to CAF SoCal's website the machine is an A6M3 "sponsored" by David Price, who some of you may remember had a respectable collection based in California some years ago. If this machine is indeed coming to Wanaka, we can expect to see this through our unbelieving eyes: www.airliners.net/photo/Mitsubishi-A6M3-Reisen/1133942/L/Great news!

Hmmm, interesting. Regardless of the powerplant it would be a candidate to meet the 'never before seen in NZ skies' promo at the WOW website. At least the airframe is the real deal and a P40 vs Zero 'dogfight' would be one for the books (with the P40 firing it's guns of course!!).

Great coup for the Wanaka airshow, well done to them. It'd be a real performer to see. However I doubt anything will eclipse my memories of seeing the Zero replica and P-40 dogfight between Mark and Ray Hanna in 1992. Now that was awesome! Also the Zero replica versus the Avenger, then eing splashed by the P-40 at the Easter 1993 show at Wanaka, that was cool too.

the shippers of the Zero have run into the same trouble as the Spitfire export from the USA.
When approached by US Customs for an "End User Certificate" for a weapon of war they had blank looks on their faces!
Yep the Zero is still described as a war machine and as such requires the approval of the US State Department before it can be exported, and an "End User Certificate" which declares that it will not be used for any warlike activities.

CAF WWII Mitsubishi Zero to arrive into Long Beach (from On TUE-02MAR, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) will be flying their Mitsubishi A6M - one of only three flyable worldwide - into AirFlite. The aircraft is going to be shipped to New Zealand for an airshow. The Zero is expected to arrive between 1230-1300 depending on wx. The CAF will arrange to defuel and prep the aircraft for shipping. A trucking and crane company will arrive at approx 2200 to load the plane onto a lowbed trailer to be trucked to the port. The plan is to stage the trailer on Globemaster Way around 2200 and to have the Zero towed by AirFlite to TWY B just north of the Wardlow Gate. The crane will pickup the aircraft OVER the fence and place the aircraft onto the trailer. CHP will escort as an oversized load, starting at 0100. Regards Mike

Looks like the CAF Zero will definatly be here in time for WOW. After a quick bit of researching I was able to discover the name of the ship that is transporting the Zero to NZ and her arrival date and destination here. The ANNABELLE SCHULTE left Long Beach on the 3/3/10 and is due to arrive in the Port of Tauranga on the 18/3/10 and form what ive read I believe that the Zero will be unloaded here and from there it will fly to Wanaka.

I wonder if the Zero and B-17 will be sitting together on the Tauranga dock. That would be an amazing reunion to see.
I'd love to get to see it fly out of Tauranga, if anyone can give us a date, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I guess it is best to keep them segregated in case they start a fight.
