Am reasonably sure the answer is no. Certainly there was consideration to operate the '10 there, but reality was the landing performance blo required. The aircraft apparently required additional stopping capabilty so nose wheel braking to make the performance demands proposed, and at the time this apparently a 'one off' so not persevered with. Many of the crew were confident the aircraft could have operated without any mods however.

I grew up overlooking Wellington airport from Melrose and can remember waking up one morning and seeing an Air NZ 747 parked at the international terminal. From what I can remember, it was a long haul flight aiming for Auckland, but both Auckland and Christchurch had been closed due to fog. It didn't have sufficient fuel for a safe trip to Oz, so the decision was made to land in Wellington. I can still clearly remember going to school (I think I was standard 3) and telling the teacher I had seen a 747, and her telling me not to make up stories! She did have the decency to apologise the next day when there had been photos in the Evening Post. I think this would have been somewhere around 1987. Does anyone have any more accurate records or photos? I can remember seeing an empty 747 landing at WLG as a trial on another occasion, but was this the only time a 747 with passengers landed in Wellington? I recall the trial landing braking heavily and pulling up very short on the runway - not far past the air force hangar. Does anyone have photos of either of these landings, or know of other 747 visits to Wellington? Lachlan

The morning headlines were '747 lands safely' and claiming that it was a first.

My wife and children were on the 18th Sep flight into Wgtn. Great surprise to receive their call that they were in Wgtn, not Akl. They were seated close to one of the "exit" and was interested in their response and that of the cabin crew as the landing took place, both landing and subsequent take-off.
All were very professional. I understand that all non-human "baggage" was removed from the 7474 and shipped to Auckland independently.

I know this is an old thread but I was on the first ever 747 flight to land at Wellington airport, full of passengers from Melbourne. My son was born in '83 and he was still very small and in a push chair. He and his elder sister had their own seats. It was 1987 at the latest but was probably earlier. It was school holiday time in Melbourne too, because I was a teacher. We made several attempts to land at Auckland but took off each time, the same thing happened trying to land at Christchurch. Unfortunately I had already explained to my wife that we would be landing at Christchurch because Wellington was unsafe for a 747. We were warned that the braking would be severe. We had to take sharp objects like pens out of our pockets. I was terrified and the crew were clearly on edge. It was either Air NZ or QANTAS. If you are really interested it was definitely front page news the next morning, as I was horrified that we were all packed back onto the plane and it took off for Auckland. The landing and take off both felt fine but I did notice a dirty great mountain dead ahead of the runway. My understanding of that night is that the pilot had no option but to land at Wellington, as there was not enough fuel to go back to Melbourne or fly on to possibly Fiji.

I found this old thread while trying to date an old photo I just scanned. I remember the Qantas SPs operating out of Wellington. I even remember seeing — and hearing — one do a go around on one occasion. I also remember the modern, new 767s showing up and how exciting they were. I would eventually get to fly on both Qantas and Air NZ 767s to and from Australia and elsewhere, but never on an SP. The day this beast hove into Wellington I was down at Aotea Lagoon with my kids and my Dad and we saw it turn over the beacon at Titahi bay and head for Wellington. We leapt in the car and drove in to find it sitting here, and we then went for a quick tour on board. I did fly on one of the Air NZ -200 fleet a couple of years earlier LAX-HNL-RAR-AKL, but I do not know the rego at this stage. I'm sure there's another photo somewhere that will tell me.
