Tuesday 16th March Rob Burns and Chris Bromley will attempt in our New Zealand based Thunder Mustang “Tigers Blood” to gain the FAI Word Record for a speed flight from Auckland, New Zealand to Norfolk Island, Australia return. Each leg is 518 nautical miles and over water.
At this stage the weather forecast is good, Chris and Rob will depart early Tuesday morning from Ardmore airfield to Auckland international Airport where they will fill up with Avgas, flight plan, clear customs and depart around 9.30 hrs. Later that day we hope to be celebrating at our Kiwi Thunder hangar afternoon after they touch down at Ardmore around 15.00 – 16.00hrs having cleared customs upon their return at Auckland international Airport.

What is the current record Simon? I take it they stop for fuel at Norfolk Island?

Best of luck and a bit of a bugger that I'm working that day, would have been nice to get a few photos of the victorious arrival back at Ardmore.
I'll have a word to the news department though and see if they're interested (can't promise anything though).
Cheers, Stu.

Unfortunately due to our current weather Rob and Chris have rescheduled the record attempt for this Friday. If they are successful drinks will be on in our hangar from five pm. Stay tuned for progress on the day.

Goodluck to all concerned, overwater flights in single engine aircraft are not for the faint of heart. Would be good to see if TV 3 covered it..then at least I could see the results!

Good luck with the weather for Friday guys.
Does the extra passenger aboard slow the aircraft's speed any in such a record attempt, Simon? I guess you have two aboard so there is a second-pilot to take over the flying in shifts?

I thought they might have put another tank in the rear seat. Good stint, hope they pull it off.

If it wasn't for the water, it wouldn't be that hard! its actually a shorter distance than Ardmore to Mandeville! Best wishes guys - hope it goes well (It should be really boring - you dont want "exciting" in over water flight.....)

In our Thunder Mustang Chris Bromley And Rob Burns departed Ardmore today at 08.30 hrs for Auckland International airport where they processed through customs, toped up the gas and flight planed. They set heading for Norfolk Island at 10.04 hrs. Weather conditions in Auckland 8/8 cloud so hoping they get a break as they head North. We anticipate them back in Auckland at 16.00 hrs. You are all invited for drinks at the Thunder Mustang hangar at 14.30 hrs. Photos are on the “Thunder Mustang Face Book Group” of the departure.

As I type this the boys are on their return leg bound Auckland , New Zealand. We are expecting them to touch down at Auckland International at 15.45 hrs and be back at Ardmore 16.30 hrs. I hope they are bringing me some duty free! Great Photos Colin The prop is allways coarse prior to start.
Hope to see some of you later today. Cheers, Simon
