The lead aircraft must have beat a hasty retreat after this buzz-and-break as he cannot be seen. Might be tail-on to the viewer and receding in his turn. I checked with a magnifying glass but cannot see any hint of a third image.

Correct. There were three F105D's there, one of which had an engine change done on the concrete apron outside the control tower. I was able to watch some of that at the time. Huge powerplants in those 100 series fighters. (Owen Cunliffe collection)

I checked with a magnifying glass but cannot see any hint of a third image. Whilst clearly the camera angle in both shots is the same , to me the aircraft in the second shot look a little bigger ( ie ,they seem a little closer to the camera ) suggesting the photos are not consecutive shots of the same aircraft . The bits in the foreground seem about the same size in each shot , so I dont think its a zoom thing .

Six F-105D aircraft from the 18th Tactical Fighter Wing at Guam arrived at Ohakea on the Saturday prior to Air Force Day 1964 after a 7 and a half hour flight. They were refuelled by four KB-50J tankers over New Guinea and 100 miles NE of Brisbane. The tankers carried on to Christchurch with two of them flying up to Ohakea later in the week. Other overseas aircraft attending were
RCAF CL-44Yukon
RAF 3x Victor B.2 Beverley C.1 Argosy C.1 Britannia C.1 Hastings C.4
RAAF C-130A P2V-5 2x P2V7
US Navy Orion P-3A LC-130F
USAF 4xKB-50J 6X F105D 6x C-130B 2x C-124A
Victors, RNZAF Canberras and F105s made numerous formation flights around the country during the week prior to the airshow. I have arrival dates and serial numbers if anybody wants them, also the RNZAF aircraft which took part.

Sorry to create a zombie thread but does anyone have the identities of the 6 USAF F-105D that attended this show? Regards Ron

If my memory serves me correctly. As a prelude to the event, wasn’t a lot of damage done and windows broken in the Bulls area when some aircraft broke the sound barrier? Can somebody elaborate?

Ron, according to AHSNZ Journal April 1964 page 76 the 6 USAF F-105Ds logged were 61-215, 61-171, 61-212, 62-4224, 62-4269 and 62-4247.

These two shots are from Chub Roberts and may be at Ohakea for the Open Day

Well, there is a "212" in each of the upper photo and the list I provided a few minutes earlier so that is a step in the right direction. Do you have any more photos of other attending F105s providing a clear similar match to improve the odds? There are indeed 6 aircraft in the photo, which works in the match's favour.

planewriting and pjw4118 Thank you for that information. I figured that AHSNZ would have recorded the serials. I asked the question as a result of finding this photo of F-105D 61-0212 landing at RAAF Williamtown. It was thought to have been taken in October 1965 when five F-105F and one F-105D deployed to Williamtown for Operation Pacific Concord 1. However there are photos of the single F-105D at Williamtown and its identity is clearly 62-4375. Therefore this photo of 61-0212 must have been taken in 1964 when the aircraft were returning from Ohakea. The inbound flight was direct from Guam air-refueled as "Operation Wing Over". Many thanks for solving this problem. Regards Ron
