Some of my amateur efforts... DAK at touchdown LA9 definitely my highlight too! One of the "pros" Freefall Great to see jets back at WOW, but I reckon the RNZAF A4 airfield attack was lower, faster, more spectacular. Pyros mis-fire After the sub sank! The Easter Bunny The Master Lovely!

Super phtos Mike. That is pretty clever having blue smoke to similate depth charge water splashes. I guess that Jurgis was filling the roll usually played by the Me108 in the Dakota display then? It looks pretty neat.

Apart from the Seasprite and Kiwi Blue, what else was present from the RNZAF? Obviously no Red Checkers, but did the Air Force send an Iroquois, a Hercules, an Orion, a Super King Air or a Boeing this year?

Yes the Vampire uses all the runway for both take off and landing! Must be pretty marginal operating it out of Wanaka. By comparison the L-39 only uses half of the runway. Who can remember the Grumman Albatross that used up the entire runway at Wanaka, plus a hundred yards or so of grass beyond the end of the runway? That would have been in 1994 or 1996. Damon is right, 1996. Enjoying all the other pics so far chaps, very inspiring to get organised for next time!

I guess the Vampire has a slightly swept wing, with no leading edge devices plus probably underpowered does not help....Good comparison is watching EMB 145's take off at LAX or LHR...use a huge amout of runway for a 50 seat jet (no leading edge devices)

WoW! Great photos there guys. I've said before that my favourite WWII warbird is the P-47 Thunderbolt. After seeing the fantastic photos you have all taken of the La-9 I may have to change that... (even though it is strictly speaking a post-war design) You must admit that there are similarities in the two designs so my wavering is understandable. Now I'm really getting depressed at having had to miss the 2010 show. Keep the great images coming to keep me away from the Prozac...

You must know of a different model Vampire than the ones I worked on as they all had tapered wings!. They can get off quickly if they want to, it's up to the pilot and if the taxpayer isn't paying you'd keep it on the ground until you had ample speed.

Thanks for sharing the photos. Great to be able to see what went on so soon after the event - that doesn't mean I'll be able to resist the next issue of Classic Wings though.

question: did the hurricane go up on sunday? I'm positive it never went up on sat. Which is of course when I was there with 35 knot cross winds... darn.

Indeed, it looks like the Dakota has been having a curry, and got the runs.

Dakota got the runs?! Not so. The area underneath have a protectant coating to ease the removal of exhaust staining from the PW1830's. Looks nice in silver though.

I know oil isn't the cause of the staining but if a radial stops burning, dripping or leaking oil ......LAND! ;D
For those wondering about the smoke it's normally a separate tank with diesel sprayed or dripped into the hot exhaust.
