We have the Services Corrective Establishment which was formerly at Ardmore and has been at the front gate at Burnham Military Camp since the mid-90s. It is a tri-service facility, with staff and visitors from all 3 services. It is now a much smaller facility than it used to be. I think there are a maximum of 8 beds, including up to 2 for females. In the last few years there have been some long-term detainees (a maximum of 2 years), but the vast majority of people go in for relatively short periods and they are then returned to their units with their behaviour "corrected". The whole focus of the establishment is on rehabilitation, even those who are subsequently to be dismissed at the end of their sentence. The Armed Forces Discipline Act 1971 allows for the establishment of Services Corrective Establishments both in New Zealand and abroad as required. The last detention facility overseas may have been in Singapore. I suspect few people enjoy their time in SCE but most came out of it better soldiers, sailors, and airmen them when they went in, and many went on to get promotion and put their past behind them. As it happens I prosecuted a Court Martial in Linton Military Camp which resulted in the defendant becoming the first guest at the front gate at Burnham when Ardmore closed down.
