With reference to photos of ZK AYZ I haven't read the post on the subject but am surprised with the reference to it.The police arranged for the army to detonate the remains of the aircraft I understand around 1964 as trampers etc were climbing up to the aircraft and removing different items from it. My late husband was the captain.

Welcome Melta. Yes, my father had said the same thing to me, that the army had covered it over. He reckoned one reason was it could be seen glinting in the sunlight from the air and from some roads. I think the police had been getting a few calls about it.

According to Richard Waughs book the SAS did detonate the cliff above the wreck, but because of the shape of the ravine it lay in, only the front half, which was mainly the burnt out fuselage, actually got covered. The remainder of the wreck was displaced, but sections of both wings and the tail were uncovered. the book has a series of photos taken over the years showing how the bush has reclaimed it.

Michelle Sim of the Air Force Museum of New Zealand just fired this video through to me that she'd seen on a tramping group's page.

I remember the day that AYZ crashed. I was a Tauranga Boy's college and during the lunch break on the wet and windy day, streams of emergency vehicles were heading up Cameron Road towards the Kaimas. It wasn't until we got home after school that we learned a DC3 was missing.

That video is very handy for me as I've wanted to visit that spot for years now but have had doubts about time, terrain etc. Still hard to convince my 'team' to visit the spot.
Bit of a shame that this channels other videos resort to clickbait thumbnails (photo of Johnston Peak Electra Engine for a video about this DC3)
