Yes, its all on again in November, the Black Sands Fly - In at Raglan. November 6th and 7th 2010. Details to be posted in the next month or two on the SAA web page www.saa.org.nzBeach flying is on again this year, to be held on Saturday afternoon. This event has become a "must attend" on the sport flying calendar, and is open to anyone - all types of aircraft are welcome - if you can fit it in to the airfield, you can bring it along. Hope to see some of you there. Maybe a certain blue and white own - design homebuilt might make it there... (No promises!)

Indeed it is... maybe a shower Friday, but generally looking good. may be some moderate wind, but its hard to tell what the wind is doing in the Raglan microclimate! If flying in, just watch the conditions, especially the sink over the estuary and the float over the airfield... and Stu can tell you about the sudden afternoon wind shift as the sea Breeze fills out! Gonna be an absolute cracker of a weekend!

The publicly accessible part of the day is at Raglan Airfield, but the Beach landings are at Gibson's Beach, which is 8 Miles North of the Raglan harbour, with no road access. We'll try and get some photos of the landings posted here next week though!

Whatever do you mean Bruce? ;D s85.photobucket.com/albums/k52/stu_65/?action=view¤t=nzra.flvI was simply demonstrating to the assembled attendees the technique of taking off from Raglan with a tailwind followed by how to handle sink Wish I could make it this year but - as usual - I'm busy Lots of photos please.

So, how did it all go?
From my sickbed over the weekend it looks like you all had wonderful weather, as did the World Rowing Champs here in Cambridge who've had really decent weather all week apart from the one gusty day.

Did anyone compete in the 'Sink into the Drink' competition this year?

no, just one air miss (two aircraft rolling on different sides of the same strip, and converging), several wrong circuit directions, One landing on the reciprocal runway (downwind) despite being told and the normal selection of stupid pedestrians.... Obviously reading is not a currently used skill.....

I attended on the Saturday afternoon - along with Sir Minty and Meredith as crew. Delta Xray Quebec pulled one of her faulty radio tricks just as we were about to depart WP, so after a bit of a hassle with that (can't overhead Auckland International NORDO) we got there just before 2pm. There seemed to be fewer aircraft in residence this year, but Bruce assured me that the numbers, including fly-bys, were up around the 70 mark at that stage. A lot of the aircraft were the usual suspects, but in the time we were there three new beasts put in appearances. This Vans RV7 was N724TD before becoming ZK-LVA in August this year, Auckland based Among the four gyros present was this new AutoGyro Europe MT03 Eagle, ZK-ZEE/2. It lives at Tauranga New Zealands second Cri Cri is ZK-CRI/2, a Colomban Cri Cri MC-15. The New Plymouth owner poses beside his well-polished creation He trailered the Cri Cri to Raglan, and it did not fly during the time I was around. The trailer is seen at the rear of this photo The wind was quite variable, mostly a direct crosswind. Fun for the taildraggers. Unfortunately we had to depart about 5pm as it is a busy time of the year. Arriving back at Whenuapai we had a frustrating time orbiting while the resurgent skydiving club hogged the airspace. Well done to the Black Sands organizers.

What has happened to Nev Hayes' Cricri? Didn't that used to be ZK-CRI too?

The wind was significantly friendlier today and we had a lot more aircraft turn up from further afield. A number took part in the "Poker Run" when cards were collected from various airstrips around the Waikato. A certain well Known female pilot was heard to ask on 119.1 (the frequency used by all and sundry) "Am I going to be too late for the strip poker?" we gave her heaps... The Official total (Based on the number of people who paid landing fees to us) was 76 aircraft, but in practice there were a lot more who either paid their fees directly at the campground, or didn't pay at all (B**stards...) Total number of landings was well over 200, but of course a lot of aircraft made several landings over the weekend. Lovely weekend. One problem though... if I fly CKE to the next one, how am I going to get my car full of assorted fly - in organising crap over to Raglan....

Cargo pannier - a bloody big one! That is such a shame to read again about people not paying the landing fee. Is there any easy way to chase it up with the tightwads who did not pay?

Ah yes, LBW, thanks Bruce, I'd forgotten that lovely little giggle. Nev is a great bloke. It will be neat to perhaps someday see two Cricri together in the air.
