Thanks Its been a few weeks since the report, nothing in the media I can see unless its been kept quiet (which is understandable). Someone one on the "grapevine" will know about it.

From what I know which is very limited, was invloved in forced landing after engine propblems. Landed in a paddock in North Canterbury, nil inury and unsure of damage to aircraft.
Sorry can't add much more but will pass on any news on if I hear it.

I have heard only third hand that it was a reduction gearbox failure and that the aircraft crashed (rather than landed)[overstretching the glide] & that the aircraft is munted.

Was reported in the CHCH Press when it happened. The day after I was out at Loburn Abbey to meet Ivan Campbell actually. Thought it might have been one of the 2 new machines that are required to do 40hrs test flying prior to delivery and not Ivan's personal machine. A great wee airfield and production hangar to visit if you're through the area. Ivan builds the Titan Mustang, 80% Tiger Moth and 90% Spitfire replica's. With a few of each in various stages of build. I believe he's happy to have visits by air and road with a ring ahead. www.campbellaeroclassics.com/index.htmlGoogle Earth Lat/Long: 43°14'3.86"S 172°29'31.05"E Cheers S2K

I have heard 3rd hand that all NZ Titan Mustangs are voluntary grounded while the NZ-made reduction system design is being revisited. I understand there are concerns...

Well it wouldnt be ALL NZ titan Mustangs if it is a gearbox issue, as there are at least 4 different powerplants on the NZ Titans, with a variety of gearbox and propeller types in use. I havent heard of gearbox concerns, and I would expect to do so as I have a similar gearbox on ZK-CKE.

If it is a problem with the gearbox ZK-TLI, ZK-WSV and ZK-DBG (gone overseas) have been fitted with the autoflight geardrive and ZK-SMF was fitted with an earlier autoflight reduction drive. There are a couple more that haven't been registered yet that also have the same geardrive. The geardrive has been pretty sucessful up to now the design must have clocked up a few hours in the gyrocopters and various microlights its been fitted to.

A long story short, as I have heard, gearbox failed, instant loss of thrust necessitated a forced landing which was not entirely successful for reasons which are unimportant right now. Aircraft is now an expensive pile of twisted metal, totaled.
My guess is the problem arises when the gearbox is fitted to the "mini merlin" (Vitara V6), I expect it's just not strong enough.

I borrowed this from another forum : www.homebuiltairplanes.com/forums/firewall-forward-props-fuel-system/5968-what-psru-can-we-really-trust-9.htmlResult of CAA Investigation into ZK-MST We have today received preliminary findings from CAA regarding ZK-MST as follows: Their analysis and inspection of the gear box shows there is no engineering fault with the gearbox, or other components, and there was no oil lubrication or temperature problems. CAA's independent inquiry has come to the conclusion that this is a harmonics issue which developed between this particular combination of Suzuki V6 engine, Vesta LT4-82EH prop and Autoflight Geardrive. Accordingly CAA have advised that this combination is not to be operated. To pinpoint the exact cause of this specific harmonics issue would take extensive and prolonged research, and it is not the intention of CAA to commit resources and finance to further investigate. We advise that the experimental V6 combinations that are so far working to date and are continuing to develop a test history are the combination with the Whirlwind hollow blade 84" prop supplied by Titan, the Autoflight Geardrive and the Suzuki 2.5L or 2.7L and the Honda 3.5L engines. The 912ULS and 914S Rotax engine options continue to work well with the 70" Whirlwind Blade. Campbell Aviation Hope this clears things up Shane

As a flow on affect from all of the above, unfortunately no current New Zealand insurance companies will insure future T-51 Mustangs in Australasia. The word is that once the existing policies mature, that's it. Even the Rotax powered machines are not favored at all by the insurers. Not good new for T-51 owners.
