Baz, not only was the MOTAT Mosquito Australian built but Glyn Powell's aircraft was too. Interesting photos. Not easy on the dial up though. Thanks Dave, sorry about dialup its a pain I don't miss but I know what you mean trying to look at photos. Maybe they mean the last survivor of the Aussie built ones in Australia?? I know theres at least another one (Point Cook?) so maybe its not Aussie built?) Also I was reading the latest Aeroplane Monthly and had the exhaust arrangement for the Mosquito explained. The early marks had 5 stacks per side (10 per engine) with the rearmost stub serving 2 ports or 2 into 1 on each bank. However on the later Merlins which were a bit longer it meant they could fit an individual stack (6 per side 12 per engine) as it was further away from the leading edge of the wing. I recall seeing a photo of a Mosquito in the UK (postwar) with a horrible 3 stack exhaust on each side!

Just got this reply back Trevor Dean the Bankstown Curator while chatting about their Dakotas:
"Thanks for the great photos on your web site.
Just one correction. The Helicopter referred to is actually Sikorsky S-55. It was originally in military configuration, used by the US Marine Corps. Finding it’s way to Australia, the Chopper was reconfigured as a VIP Private Transport aircraft. Not finding a buyer when the time came to sell, the Sikorsky was donated to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Nowra (you visited there I believe).
Eventually not fitting in with the now all Navy image (the Museum was for some time known as Australia’s Museum of Flight) I acquired the aircraft on behalf of the Australian Aviation Museum. In an ironic twist, it was transported to Bankstown Airport by the Australian Army Engineer Corps !!!
Hope to visit NZ again in the not too distant future.
Kind regards Trevor"

Good stuff Baz. I'm not too jealous, I have been inside three Hudsons. NZ2013, NZ2031 and NZ2035.
The coloured lights are a bit odd. Not unpleasant but unusual I guess, and perhaps detrimental to your photography. Were you prohibited from using the flash and a tripod in these musuems? I note a lot of the photos are not focused, and I know some museums don't allow flashing or tripods, so just wondering.

Ah yes But this one flies! ;D Alright it was actually nor flying at the time I'll give you that! I haven't got a tripod and the flash does its best but its only a cheap camera and when you look at the scree the shot you take looks to be focused ok (actually might be a bit of hand shake more likely) but its not til you see it on a PC that you find out its not the greatest picture! My brother in law bought a new camera (an SLR) so I bought his old one off him (with a certain airshow in mind next Easter) so the standard of my photos should improve. (Well I can only go up can't I ha ha)

Yes, I have had that issue in darker conditions where the camera tells you it's focused, it looks all good on the small screen, but once blown up it's soft, or worse. It's a bit annoying but oh well.
All three Hudsons I have been into used to fly, does that count? For the record I have also seen NZ2049 up close too, but there was no way of getting into it back then. I reckon with the superb job the RNZAF Museum did on their Hudson, if it had good engines they could probably fly it no trouble. I have been told by a learned person who has looked closely at both, that the Wigram one is actually in better condition than the Temora one.

Baz , great photos, getting better all the time. Thanks for hosting my Otter photos which I have just found. I asked Dave to move them but I didnt know where they were to start with. Sorry to be disruptive with your travel report. Mind you it could be an useful technique if a thread gets too boring, just insert something from left field.

I am at present reading a book by Ben Rich on the Lockheed Skunk Works. A fascinating and incredibly adsorbing read. The Hudson gets a mention because when it originally was planned, it was directionality unstable and if it ever had to fly on one engine would almost certainly fly directly to the scene of the crash. It was a 23 year old Clarence" Kelly" Johnson who added the now common twin configuration Sorry, for the thread bump, it was seeing that picture of the Temora Hudson that reminded me. If you have not read the book, do so. It is also about the building and the amazing amount of testing that went into the Nighthawk, especially the stealth aspect of it.

Which Spitfire is that? Is it in a Mediterranean theatre colour scheme? It looks like Azure blue underneath. I note it is a Mk Vc but has six exhaust stubs like the specially modified Aboukir Specials and also long cannons. Interesting.

Is that a Jindivik behind the Spitfire? It is an Ikara Dave. What I want to know. What's the story on the little jigger hanging from the roof with red wheels?
