I wonder if it is one of the Banshees that broke the sound barrier during a visit of thier carrier (USS intrepid I think) in the mid 1950s. The carrier visited Wellington and as it arrived it flew off a flight of banshees, at least one of which set off a sonic boom in a shallow dive over Wellington Harbour. They later toured over the southern half of the north Island, which may be when the photo was taken. - Just a guess, does anyone have any more leads?

That seller had a whole lot of photos for sale, I managed to get a bunch including; - shots of Ohakea taken during the '50s with Devons and Mustangs on the ramp - an RNZAF P-40 in flight (air to air) possibly NZ3039. - an air to air of an RAF Valient over the Manawatu. - a pair of Vampire trainers taxying. - a shot of the Avenger now in the RNZAF on the ramp in its target towing colours. - the shot that you mention (not that one though, they had two). - the photo taken after the one above with the Banshee banking away over Mt. Egmont.
I think they are all RNZAF public relations photos from the '50s, there were some pearlers that I missed out on though, like a RNZAF P-51 bellied on a beach somewhere, a Suderland air to air over Auckland and so on, but they went for too much.
