Thanks for that Barnsey! I remember hounding my parents to go in there but we never did .... however we did visit Helistar just down the road and come back with a 500C-embroidered hat for Zac! Does anyone have any images of ZK-HUT and later ZK-HTH? This was the machine that had a bit of a whoopsie at an airshow: Photos from Rex Forrester's book The Helicopter Hunters. ZK-HUT Belonged to My Uncle! Dick Paku and Duncan Sutherland of Homewood Masterton, I remember the Front page of the newspaper on Monday after this accident at hood aerodrome, the heading was Look Mum No Tail, and showed a snap of My Uncle Standing on the 500 in his white overalls, Dick gave up flying after that, he was a top dressing pilot in Masterton for 30 years. He owned an Airtruck which i have fond but scary memory's of flying in the hopper seat below the pilot while doing top dressing runs over farms, he bought a Cessna AgWagon after that, when the Deer Recovery got big in the late 70`s early 80`s Dick got his Chopper license in Ardmore and purchased a 300 and then later the 500 ZK-HUT. He is Living Now in Masterton today, I will try and track some photo`s down from him. Richard Paku (Nephew) Brisbane Australia

Found these poor quality pic's, think the rego may be ZK KAM, rough date between winter 1986 to winter 1988 saw her parked in a field on the way up to Arthurs Pass, Canterbury. Great thread by the way, sure I have some more, my favorite Helicopter the Huges 500!

Found a couple of old slides of a 500D that was dear to me, from 1986 to 88 I had a great job videoing people skiing at Mount Hutt Ski Area. One of my duties was to every now and then jump in Alan Bond's 500D and go out into the Southern Alps and video people heli skiing in the back country. This involved flying to the top of a slope skiing half way down parking up then filming as people skied by, yep someone had to do it and it happened to be me. "Bondy", as he was known to all, knew I loved flying in his machine so when ever there was a empty seat I often went along for the jolly. One of my best days in the mountains when I was asked to film the new power cable line which was installed from Pudding Hill up to the ski area base. When there were paying passengers the flying had to be straight and level, fairly conservative. Because there was no one in the machine she was lite this meant she could be thrown around, man they are just a way cool machine, had such a great morning and still look at the video every now and then. This machine and the experiences I had in it are one of the reasons I love aviation. Sadly a few years after my time there Alan Bond along with a member of the ski patrol Bruce Garrick died in this machine flying up the flooding Rakaia river to rescue some trapped fishermen in bad weather. (My memory is a bit hazy on this so I can't remember 100% if the detail is correct?) Alan Bond rescued many injured people from the mountains, I also remember he had an aerofoil shaped pod that replaced one of the rear doors to he could carry patients. RIP "Bondy" and Bruce great people.

Couple more to add to the album. HBC landing near Mt Albert in the Canty high country, for our wedding. The Hughes 500s have always been my favorite! of course I made sure I got the job of organising the transport. Stand by for some action shots of ZK-HUW in action on the coast (have to transfer them from VHS. Courtesy Bryan Morgan Photography. Attachments:

Has anyone photos of ZK-HHX, as asked above, and of the current WAW/Ravensdown NOTAR ZK-HZG? These are for a modelling project and any pics would be appreciated.

Hi guys. Love this thred. I am a bit of a hughes 500 fan, and am planning on doing a 1/48 diorama involving a hughes 500, a piper super cub, and a few other vehicles involved in NZ deer recovery. The helicopter i would like to model is the one pictured, from Rex Forrester's book 'Chopper Boys'. I am stumped on the colour scheme though. I'm guessing that the I.D. letter is inside a yellow circle, but the other colours i am stuck on. Anyone have any ideas? It is ZK - HMG, and was based in Haast at the time with Helicorp Ltd.

It is ZK - HMG, and was based in Haast at the time with Helicorp Ltd. That would have been between 1985 - 1989, before it went up to Vanuatu.

Yes that would be correct. According to Rex Forrester's "The Helicopter Hunters" (not Chopper Boys as previously stated) in 1986 it was owned by Helicorp ltd in Haast, and piloted by Marty Nolan.
