Fletcher Fu-24-950 c/n 238 spent several months at Hamilton as ZK-EGP - seen here 27March78 The machine was then registered as ZK-USU ( to attempt to replicate VH-USU) for a NZ-Australia-NZ flight on the 50th anniversary of the 'Southern Cross' flight. ZK-USU at Wigram before the flight, 9Sept78 taxiing out and departing Wigram on the 9th The flight was successful, Cliff Tait completing the attempt in 27hrs 2min. Seen here on landing back at Wigram 10Sept78 After this mission, the Fletcher returned to Australia in 1979 as VH-MXD. After some years there, it came back to NZ resuming life as ZK-EGP with Far North Air Ltd., Kaitaia in 2002. If finally came to a nasty end in a fatal crash near Kaitaia 31Mar06.

27 hours in a Fletcher, madness!
I note that the BCNZ network ONE has its logo on the Fletcher ZK-USU. Did BCNZ film and televise the airshow by any chance?

Still new at this, so bear with me. As promised here are some scans of the Fletcher negatives. These web images are only 72 dpi. On the high res (some at 4800dpi) you can read some of the smaller print etc. Spent about two hours on these, between positioning negs, scanning, resizing, caption info, uploading to Photobucket and copying the image links etc. I HOPE to get more proficient, and faster at it, with some more experience. Here is the info chart of photos below. And I skipped ahead to photo # 10, because I saw there was some interest in the Fletcher with dual control, and that one has "dual control" written on the cowling. Suggestions, and "constructive" criticism, always welcome. 1. ZK-BHF 2. ZK-BHL-M.R. Cronin Ltd., Palmerston North, 12/89 3. ZK-BHQ-Robertson air Services Ltd. 4. ZK-BIE-East Coast Air Services 5. ZK-BIH-Robertson, Hamilton, Tekuiti & Rotorua, Fu-24S 6. ZK-BIX-Ray Air, Owner operator Raymond A. Young, Rotorua 29/1/90 10. ZK-EGY-Aeroworkm Wanganui, Dual Control, 12/89

Superb! Is it possible for you to post #9 and #11 Joe? Thanks in advance In my many exchanges of info and photos and bits, with my New Zealand aviation friends, we are always focused on trying to give each other something that will produce a smile, for the day. Hope this helps as there is a color shot here... DJE is at Wanganui 12/89 and LTR is Archerfield 11/6/90.Says "Pacific Aerospace Corporation" at rear of cockpit on side.

Looking at that pic of ZK-BHF . . . this aircraft was delivered to Aircraft Service in March 1955. As it is factory paint and still sports the original 1950s bulbous hopper, I'd say that the photo was taken at Mangere about the time it was delivered, March/April 1955.

Of those early Fletchers, I'd be really keen to find photos of the following, still missing after many years searching: ZK-BHP - used by Farmers ATD Co.Ltd., Invercargill 1955-56 ZK-BIQ - used by Advance Aviation Ltd., Kaitaia 1956-57 ZK-BIW ZK-BOH - both assembled here and then immediately sold into Australia in 1957 ZK-CFS - used by Robertson Air Services Ltd., Hamilton 1963-65

Out of interest are there or have there ever been any Fletchers or Crescoes based in or just outside of Cambridge? Or do they all reside at Rukuhia that do this area? I'm sure there will be some pilots who live here as half the Hamilton Airport population seems to, but I wondered if there were any Fletchers on our local strips at any time?

I think Super Air have only one local unit based at Hamilton.Theres not actually much topdressing done around the Waikato as its a bit flat.In their hey day Robertsons may have parked a Fletcher there abouts,in the 70's just about every one horse town had a Fletcher parked near by.

Thanks. I guess all the Fletchers and Crescoes we see flying round here are in Hamilton for servicing then?
It's interesting you say this area is too flat for topdressing, I never thought about that as a lot of the pioneer work in topdressing was done in the Whitehall hills behind Cambridge by Arthur Baker and Ozzie James, and the whole industry in terms of building Fletchers and Cresco is centred on the flat between Hamilton and Cambridge. The topdressers certainly do remain active around Whitehall by the way, I've seen them working up there on several occasions as my mate's family farm is on Buckland Road and there's a strip right across the road that they use. I have also heard a great story where Bob Gummer was topdressing Brian Oliver's farm at Whitehall and decided to buzz the guys on the ground but hit the top of a tall pinetree with his wingtip, swinging the Tiger Moth round and he apparently spiralled down the tree all the wat to the ground, and walked away with a tiny cut on his nose and that's it, much to the merth of the people who he was going to buzz.
