Wendell Fletcher visited NZAIL in the 1970,s and gave us all the good oil at the Hamilton RAeS meeting. It was well attended and most interesting. I recall he was hanging about NZAIL for a week or so.

On this day in 1954 a little aeroplane took off from a California runway for the first time and began a legacy that lasts to this day. Happy 68th birthday Fletcher FU-24 #1, N6505C aka ZK-BDS!! N6505C via Pacific Aerospace by Zac Yates, on Flickr Photo via Pacific Aerospace.

Perhaps some kind member can identify Howard Monks Rego and give us the history of this Fletcher? I believe we pinned it down as ZK-BID, Dave Wise's site (link) has the history as follows but delticman may have more:

The second photo is clearly ZK-BID of Aircraft Service (NZ) Ltd. What evidence is there that the first photo is the same aircraft? After assembly and registration to Cable-Price Corporation Ltd., Wellington in October 1955, BID went to Aircraft Service at Mangere in December. Working as fleet no.4 it crashed Punakitere, near Kaikohe, 13Oct56. Rebuilt, it continued to work unitl Destroyed at Mangawai, Northland when stalled and struck the ground while topdressing on 5Nov1965. In my records ZK-CBQ is listed as a rebuild of ZK-BHB, with a first flight date of 14Aug1962 (before BID's demise).

I have unearthed some photos of a new Air Parts Fletcher being prepared for export. Photos taken at Hamilton, probably in the 1970s. Likely candidates are c/n 157 which went to Australia in 1971 to become VH-EDP and then back to NZ in 2011, c/n 158 which went to Australia in 1972 to become VH-TFZ, or c/n 197 which went to Australia in 1974 to become VH-END and back to NZ in 1982.

Photo taken in November 1967 and is ZK-CVS NTU, well it was registered and Cancelled but never flown. Became VH-BBH and many years later returned to NZ as ZK-CZB number 2.

It was wonderful to see BYC being used to make relief flights in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle (along with many, many other aircraft). Terrific stuff.
Thanks for sharing so many photos both here and on Facebook, Warwick.

Is that the Fletcher that was restored by Don Subritzky, Zac? It is, and the current owners did a fantastic job with the finishing touches. Don offered it to me at that forum meeting and I think we can all agree it's gone to the right home!!
