185skywagon Thanks haven't seen that one before, on approach to the Fox strip after dropping tandems. Yes its neat to have that in the background of that good pic of the lake. If the date is correct (27/3/07) that it was taken, then it was probably me unless you were there too ? I wouldn't mind getting a good quality version framed

Cessna 185D ZK-CHS Taupo Air Services Ltd. - Crashed beside the Desert Road, near Rangipo River, in bad weather while flying from Palmerston North to Taupo 19Mar79. There will be a CAA fatal accident report. Both ZK-CGH and ZK-CHS were fitted with a 260hp engine when I first jumped out of each of them. However, at some stage, one of them was re-engined with a 300hp engine, but I can't recall which one of them it was that was re-engined all these decades later. I was aware ZK-CHS had been written off. However, a few years ago I ran into ZK-CGH at Glenorchy, so I presume it has survived and is still in existence somewhere. I don't know what happened to ZK-DPH since I used to jump out of it during the 1970s.

Back to that first photo - I'd like to know more about that.
Like, the old-fashioned handwriting? Anyone know the photo's origin?
I've seen it before; I think it's in my programme from the Agricultural Airshow at Milson about 1956.
My vote goes to AZZ - Rangitikei Air Services/Garnham Aviation. Terrain could easily be Waiouru -ish.

DPH was I think the first C.185 I flew I think back in Nov 99. At that stage Murry Stewart ownd it and was using for spraying with a belly tank.About that time he exported it to Oz and then brought a Cresco of the Co-op. Murry usd to do para dropping for Marty at Masterton. I also worked for Marty LLoyd flying CBY jumping at Masterton and Hastings.Really enjoyed thoose days

On the back of the photo is S.G.Goebel. Surfcasting, Paints, Wallpaper, Picture Framer. Broadway, Marton, Phone 2671. If thats any help.
I am pretty sure it's not Garnhams AZZ which was not the first 180 topdressing anyway. Already in the country were BDB,BDC,BDE,BDF and BDU? The first 180 in service in Oct 1953?
There is a name or something written on an angle on the pilots door and the bottom paint trim is missing behind the pilots door. It appears to be a 1954 paint scheme and could be in the BF or BG regos, just going on Eddie Coates photos. Also it looks like the first letter on the fin is possibly Z, a lot of them had the full ZK rego on the fin.

My first static line jump was at Ardmore out of Cessna 185 ZK-CAN, pilot Underwood. That was using a TU chute. For further jumps out of the same aircraft at Ardmore, Dairy Flat and Ngatea the pilot was Kelvin Stark. We later had the use of a Beaver - but I can't remember which one! That was at Rotorua and Hamilton, but we lost the use of that after an 'incident' at Hamilton. Shortly after that I decided that it would be a good idea to try and make the number of aircraft landings more-or-less equal the number of aircraft takeoffs.

That ancient topdressing photo is gnawing at me........
Okay, I'll concede that it's not AZZ BDE BDF BEL or BEZ in their original schemes (Eddie Coates photos) and if BDB or BDC it's before Manawatu painted them in their scheme. However, if either of them then it's not in the same scheme as all its registration and serial number kin.
That tends to leave only BDU.
However, the possibility that the "first in the world" bit is not accurate exists.
Phil Lightband would know. He'd be interested in the history of that photo too.

Thomarse, If you know Phil why don't you run it past him? He may well recognise the machine. He would also know which was the first 180 on topdressing. I have had it reframed but kept the old writing and placed it on the back. If topdressing in 180s started in 1954 then it might be the first, but I think it started in 53, and that would be with the 53 paint scheme which is quite different. Something interesting on Eds site. ZK-BFE came into the country in August 1954, but with the 1955 paint scheme. Maybe this aircraft came into the country in 1953, but with the 54 livery?

I see BFT is in the last batch. We rebuilt BFT at Gulf Aeronautics in the early 1990s for Jim Pavitt. However its identity is not all that straight forward at this point! BFT was damaged in an accident at some stage in its past, and was rebuilt as CZW. CZW came to grief somewhere down south, Stewart Island I think, in the 1970s. This 1990s rebuild is actually using the BFT / CZW data plate, but a substantial portion of an early C182 Airframe (I dont know the rego) from an aircraft that was damaged beyond repair at Ardmore at some stage. Significant new components were also added, as were A188 bits (They are all the same part numbers!) to produce this aircraft which is somewhat of a hybrid! After BFT we repainted BJV, which at the time was owned by Tom McCready, in an identical colour scheme but with metallic Maroon and silver trim as opposed to the charcoal and silver of BFT. BJU and BUG also came through our shop from time to time.

Wehekas mystery 180 a little closer up. Does anyone know if the first 180 topdresser flew in NZ or did Cessna put a hopper in one in the USA and fly it there first before Rural started producing them?.
