In the Eddie Coates collection there are several shots of 180s with a cylinder on the starboard wing which may or may not be connected to the hopper...used to know what they were but can someone please enlighten me?
Also, many, many years ago used to go to a 'strip' at Welcome Flat in the Copeland Valley in a 180..is that still used?
Thanks.

I was just up there on foot a few weeks back, didn't know there was a strip there. Where abouts was it do you remember ?? I think there was a big land slide there maybe back in the 80s took out the hut maybe the strip too ?

No strips that are usable in welcome flat these days chinapilot, possibly still there, but overgrown, and the great DOC would have you by the b***s if they caught you!

Wasn't a strip or such but just a clear area.. Just Googled the area now and trying to remember if it was that area on the southern bank and upstream...know we used to walk over to the hut and springs...but seem to remember another shingle bar was used further upstream also... This was in the mid 60s and had some photos but long lost with many moves over the years...frustrating.

43°38'6.19"S 169°58'11.63"E That kind of looks like the remains of a strip...East - west, those numbers are in the center. About 300m worth. Might that be it ?

just trying to figure out how we got the hut from there Wish I still had those 'Instamatic' photos.... It is does look like a fair hike. The Current hut location is different to the old one, perhaps that was closer ? Google Earth is brilliant for finding strips and places, I could spend all day on here looking for spots to land

Weheka
Are there ANY back-country strips in South Westland /Fiordland that are still available to approved f/wing pilots these days?
Landsborough?

thomarse, there's at least two usable ones in the Landsborough although its a few years since I have been on them, other people would have more up to date info. Between haast and Milford there are quite a few strips dotted about. I haven't been south of Milford.

Weheka:
Are those recent shots of BDE?
I understood she had gone to Oz (hope not!)

Thomarse, pics very recent and the aircraft should be remaining in NZ. Very skilled and experienced team doing rebuild, will be better than new when finished.

Just noticed the vernier mixture control.
Is she getting IO470ed or perhaps even IO520?

Its an O-470 - you can see the carb hanging under the engine.
