Just nudging this again...
In the Eddie Coates collection there are several shots of 180s with a cylinder on the starboard wing which may or may not be connected to the hopper...used to know what they were but can someone please enlighten me?

Here's one: www.edcoatescollection.com/ac2/NZBA/ZK-BGF.htmlAnother: www.edcoatescollection.com/ac2/NZBA/ZK-BEZ.htmlEddie's asking the same question, and has also had the same thought I had - whatever it is, it sure as hell ain't heavy! I once had a newspaper clipping from the early 60s which showed a 180 up Rotorua way (probably BVG) equipped with a similar thing to drop trout fingerlings into lakes. Have also seen devices like that used in Aussie in cloud-seeding experiments.

My moneys on its a grass seeding attachment. It was filled with grass seed and could be operated by the pilot to drop grass seed while sowing super from the hopper. They seemed to have been used in Aussie more than here,it had a little window on the side facing the pilot so he could see the contents.

CKP, the pilots called her "kodak prints", as they carried polaroid cameras in the aircraft and took photos of the pax on the snow for a few bucks, but usually made more than wages this way. Taken off a framed photo.

thomarse & Pool guy...thanks for the replies... davejodel...nice photo...did some hours in CKP but long before that colour scheme. The Polaroids did indeed supplement the income...B&W to start with then colour...the shot of the 185s I posted on the Franz is a Polaroid [copied with a digital camera as they don't scan very well...] Edited to add that: come on guys - there must be more photos of "NZ's National Aircraft" around and the strips they operate/d into

I hope these forums (fora?) are preserved.....
180, fantastic shots! How long ago is that Alabaster, 'cos it doesn't show as available any more according to DoC? Mount Tutuko in the background - NZ at its finest.
Anyone read the outstanding commentary "An Era Gone" by Dave Ratcliffe? Worth a read; thought-provoking for us oldies who grew up in that era that has definitely gone, even though it was only 1970. Much of it based right there on the Alabaster strip with Dave Saxton. Some good photos too, mostly of BUQ.

Try here: www.huntingbooks.co.nz/proddetail.asp?prod=B6707Judging from the position of Tutuko in the cover photo it would appear to have been taken straight across-river from the Alabaster threshold. Which strip do you refer to as Needham's, China? A friend of my daughter's who works for DoC in IVC enquired as to which strips were available and was told Hollyford, Kaipo and Martin's Bay - Alabaster wasn't mentioned.
