These new photos have gone up onto the Air Force Museum of New Zealand site in the past two days. I'd heard of Bar Fly but never seen the artwork before, I love this. On a School of General Reconnaissance and Navigation Avro Anson: PR12 "Nose art on an Anson at the Navigation and Reconnaissance School, RNZAF Station, New Plymouth. Nose art is a rabbit wearing boxing gloves sitting on a beer bottle, with the words "Bar Fly"." And two shots of a nose art on a No. 5 Squadron RAF Curtiss Mohawk flown by a Kiwi/ MUS981021 "Close up of an engine cowl from a No. 5 Squadron RAF Mohawk, with the nose art of a Maori warrior holding a Tiaha and "Ake! Ake! Kia Kaha!" written underneath. Believed to be in India." MUS981022 "Unknown pilot posing with the engine cowl from a No. 5 Squadron RAF Mohawk. Unknown location in India. Cowl bears nose art, see MUS981021 for a close up of the artwork."

This is a detail from a photo from Alby Rountree's collection, thanks to Bev Cameron who kindly let me copy it. It shows a No. 23 Squadron-operated Corsair NZ5372 with the name 'Phyllis IV", and a Varga girl style pin-up. Does anyone have a better photo of Phyllis IV?

I haven't been on the thread much lately so it's about time I posted something. One type that is missing from the thread for Kiwis with artwork is the Halifax. 158 Squadron Halifax III Maori Chief, NP-M MZ356. Pilot F/O Jimmy Gapes RNZAF. I don't have detail on the rest of the crew but F/O Gapes was the pilot. KB To add to Keith's Halifax posting, I took the following on a visit to the 158 Squadron memorial at Lissett in November last year. Once again, not a very clear photo as it's taken through glass, and the light was in the wrong place! There are now a series of wind turbines on the old airfield, and each of them has been named after a 158 Squadron aircraft. One being Maori Chief. And from the same site, the following. I don't have any codes or serials as yet. And a close-up of the nose art which appears to be a Kiwi in a TUTU! Unfortunatley the rest of it has been cropped from the photo. The other point on this photo is that there also appears to be some award markings behind the mission tally. And finally a shot of the memorial itself. Cut from steel sheet, and engraved with the Roll Of Honour from 158 Squadron. I must check with my mate who took me there, Francis Chapman (kiwichappers here on the forum) as I know he also took a series of pics there from the information board where the above pictures have been used. Cheers, Pete M. I know this a very old thread but someone might be interested to know I picked up an original oil on board painting of the Halifax Maori Chief. I don't know how to post photos of the painting on here but if anyone is interested, please let me know!

Lockheed Venturas NZ4510 - nicknamed "Tonawhai" NZ4511 - nicknamed "Slippery Sam" after the popular card game of the time, had cards in artwork "No. 1 Squadron aircrew standing in front of a Ventura. RNZAF Station Whenuapai. L-R: Sergeant HB Newell (Wireless Operator, Air Gunner), Flying Officer J Coom (Pilot), Flight Lieutenant J McKenzie (Navigator). Nose art "Tonawhai" which was the name of the Pilot's home farm, near Masterton." Circa 1943 (PR1543.jpg) "No. 1 Squadron crew standing in front of a Ventura with nose art "Slippery Sam". RNZAF Station Whenuapai. Presumed to be Flight Sergeant IM Page and his crew." Circa 1943 (PR1540.jpg)

Flying Officer John Coom, a true gentleman now deceased, was for many years President of the Aviation Historical Society of New Zealand. Always very approachable and patient.

Tonawhai was the name of his family farm, from memory. And the boomerang shape was to ensure he would return back there.

I reckon the motto below the tiki is "Te Kooti"? By the way Dee, Doug told me just the other day that his 75 Lancaster HK601, JN Dog had a piece of nose-art! A (Disney) Pluto-look-alike apparently - first I knew! Cheers, Chris

Dave, there are 2 close up photos of her in Ventura Publications' 'Pacific Corsair - The Vought Corsair in New Zealand Service' by Robert E. Montgomery with David J. Duxbury. Pp 26 and 42. 2 overall shots of her in Warren P. Russell's 'Chance Vought F4U-1/ F4U-1D and Goodyear FG-1D Corsair' too. P.137.
