Barney and I joined BES in 1964, and he occupied the bed next to mine in E Flight Barracks. A great joker who played many a practical stunt on the unexpected. A sad loss to his family and mates.

This has just come through from the Tiger Moth Club of New Zealand secretary Ian Ashley ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is with great sadness that we report losing Tiger Moth stalwart, Des Strong who tragically died as a result of a vehicle accident on 30th July, 2020.
As a former co-owner of Pine Park (now Foxpine) Airfield with his wife Lorraine and friends, Allain and Richard Scott, Des was so bitten by the vintage aviation theme that he commissioned Stuart Tantrum to build him a Tiger Moth, the now well known ZK-BMY. In the meantime, he and his partners plus some keen friends, in their famous ‘spare time’ made huge improvements to the strip and buildings on the field. They encouraged many aviation happenings along with outdoor concerts and BBQs along with Jim Rankin’s popular safety seminars.
For passing aviators there always seemed to be a big pot of homemade soup and muffins etc available even though both wives also worked full time away from the field.
In 1992 and ‘96, they hosted highly successful Tiger Club AGM weekends and we were always most welcome as a port of call on major safaris. For me, it was always a great spot for fuelling up when on a jaunt to or from the South Island. Although accommodation was available in one of the hangars, Des and Lorraine would always insist that I stayed with them in their lovely house on the field, thereby starting a long and special friendship. In July 2009, Des asked if we would like to take care of his beautifully restored Tiger Moth so we have treasured many an adventure since. Although he did not fly himself, he thoroughly enjoyed watching the world go by from his aircraft and loved watching the pleasure of others after rides, especially with youngsters. He also just loved the camaraderie of members of the Tiger Club. Despite never carrying a map, he fancied himself as the ‘perfect navigator’ as he always said how well we did to follow him to whatever the destination! Am sure he soon realised that intricate map reading was going on behind him when the aircraft appeared to be flying somehow differently but he never once complained.
As a fit and still hard-working chap, Des will leave a huge hole in the lives of his family and ours as well.
The funeral service will be at 1 pm on Wednesday 5th August at Terracehaven Chapel, 697 Main Street Palmerston North.
Messages can be sent to Lorraine and Family at c/- P.O. Box 5191, Palmerston North 4441
