F/S (RTD) Raymond (Ray) Murphy T73939 STWD RNZAF 31 August 1949 to 30 May 1979. Am advised that Ray passed away this morning 2 January 2021 in the Chatam's. Further details TBA. RIP Ray. From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : MURPHY, Flight Sergeant Raymond, BEM.T73939; Born Chatham Islands, 29 Oct 1931; RNZAF 31 Aug 1949 to 30 May 1979; Steward. Citation British Empire Medal (NY1978): Flight Sergeant Murphy joined the RNZAF on 31 August 1949. He served for short periods as an aircraft hand and as firecrew before becoming a Steward, a trade he has followed at Woodbourne, Wigram, Taieri and with No 75 Sqn in Singapore. Since May 1972 he has been Senior Steward at RNZAF Base Woodbourne where the performance of his duties has been exemplary. In addition he has voluntarily assumed the responsibility of providing catering for many Base activities outside normal duty hours. These activities include visits by dignitaries, exercise personnel, squadrons on deployment and sports teams, both Service and civilian. F/S Murphy has supervised the catering efforts of the messes and clubs involved both during the day and evening with a total disregard of incursions into his own time. In doing so he has by his commitment set a fine example to his subordinates and his services were recognised by a ‘Merit Award for Sport’ presented to him by the Base Sports Clubs in 1976. The contribution made by F/S Murphy in the context of his catering duties is not the limit of his service to others. He has been an active member of the Base Woodbourne Search and Rescue (SAR) Team for ten years and Club President and Club Training Officer for the past seven years. He is concurrently Area Controller for the Marlborough SAR organisation of which the Woodbourne team is an integral part. The team has earned a deservedly high reputation in the local community for its readiness and ability to assist at any time. This has been largely through the expertise, leadership and devotion of his own time and effort by F/S Murphy, who in so doing has brought great credit to his Base and the RNZAF. Errol

STADDON-SMITH, John: Of Christchurch. Passed away on January 10, 2021, aged 93 years. John passed surrounded by three generations of his family with his body finally accepting that the time had come. John immigrated to New Zealand from Nottingham in the UK in 1952 and, with his previously deceased wife Eva, spent nearly seventy years working and raising a family in his adopted home of NZ. He will be forever remembered in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him as one of nature's true gentlemen, kindness, patience, courtesy, humour and chivalry personified, and the world will be that little bit worse off with his passing. John is survived by four children, ten grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren who, with other family joining remotely, held a private service on Wednesday, January 13, in Christchurch. Dad had a life-long connection to and involvement with aircraft and specifically the RNZAF. Any donation to the RNZAF Museum at Wigram in his name would be a fitting tribute of John's long association this can be made via bit.ly/JSTADDON-SMITH1001

NZC439268 P/O G M Taylor. Embarked for Canada per TRYON on 23/6/44, as A/P u/t, and like so many of this era was unable to complete his flying training course in Canada due to events way beyond his control (in fact he was never able to start it!), so was returned to NZ; arrived New Years Day 1945, still in classification of LAC. Subsequently he was returned to flying at Wigram (1 SFTS) and qualified as a service pilot on Harvards, graduated 15th August 1945 (Course 60A). David D
