Last night Bryan Hollis Thornton passed away peacefully at the great old age of 97 with a few of us by his side. Our Dad achieved great things through hard work in the 97 years but his first greatest joy was always flying, Dad proudly achieved 30,000+ flying hours for various companies throughout New Zealand and Solomon Islands. Dad second greatest joy was sailing, Dad made a positive difference in both fields in both countries. Rest In Peace Dad and fly high. - shared by Jimmy Thornton on the Fletcher FU24, PAC Cresco and Family Fans Facebook group this morning.

Sadly we have lost another of our WWII veteran Forum Members. Judy Cardno posted this to Facebook on the J-Force page.
David was also a WONZ member and had posted here in the past, but he enjoyed reading the forum. We were friends on Facebook and I enjoyed chatting/emails with him. He wrote his wartime memoir "Just an Erk " (his RNZAF experience 1944 - 1947 ), "Doi itasimashita" ( cartoons of 14 Sqdn in Japan ) and "Air Force Blues" ( RNZAFA Rotorua Branch members memories). He was also an accomplished artist.
RIP Sir.

Authors Note: During the years 1962-3 New Zealand had personnel in Thailand serving alongside the USA forces. It appears that the official reason for them been there was to drop supplies into the jungle. The crew lived in tents alongside the Americans and all maintenance was carried out in the open air. On this deployment were the following: - FG OFF J Hayward, SGT J Newton, SGT R Pluck, CPL J Girven, CPL E Clements, CPL David Sayers and CPL A Thomas. For their service in Thailand they were awarded the NZ GSM Medal (clasp Thailand) and the NZ OSM.
