I just read a post by my friend Jude Dobson saying that No. 485 (NZ) Squadron Max Collett passed away on Christmas Day, aged 99.
Not only was Max the last No. 485 (NZ) Squadron pilot and member known to still be alive, I believe he was the last wartime New Zealand Spitfire pilot too.
RIP Sir.

I'm very sorry to read that Dave, he seemed to be an ever-present part of Warbirds Over Wanaka so many people would have heard his experiences. A life well lived and a good innings.

Here is one missed earlier this year. I have just discovered that John Rowntree died in June 2022. John was the secretary of the New Zealand Fleet Air Arm Association back when I was tracking down and interviewing FAA veterans. John trained as a pilot and got to fly Corsairs, but he did not get to fly operationally aboard a carrier with them before the war ended. This was his death notice. RIP.

John was dearly loved husband of Yvonne (deceased), beloved father of Keith, Paul, Helen and Janice. Father in law of Denise, Lois and Glen. Grandfather of Reuben, Daniel, Tom, Max and Rosie. Cpl Jock Girven (a Scotsman) was Admin NCO at BES Woodbourne in 1962 when I was on 19 Course. So he must have only been at BES for the first part of 1962? What was the time of deployment to Thailand?
