Warwick Jones just rang to tell me he had spotted this death notice, and said Murray, as he was known, was a topdressing pilot (possibly with Robertson's Air Service?) and a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
WALTER, George Murray: Died 23 February 2023, suddenly at home, in his 89th year. Dearly loved husband of Lorraine for 60 years; loving father of Jacquelene (dec.), Catherine and Blair; Gramps of Georgia, Neive & Howard; father-in-law of Sarah and Rick; much loved brother of Irma and brother-in-law John. LAWRY, Richard Francis (Dick). Wing Commander (Retired) R.N.Z.A.F Fighter Pilot Died peacefully 8th March 2023. Cherished husband of Patricia. Devoted and loved father of Rachel, Chris and Maria, and their partners David, Margaret and Jon. Adored Grandpa of Vera, Mabel, Leni, Fred, Dylan, Georgina and Luc. A man of the skies and the land. He was so loved. The funeral will be held on Friday 24th March 2023 at the chapel of Taupo Funeral Services, followed by a private family burial.

R774793; Born Cheviot, 18 Jun 1935; RNZAF 3 Jan 1956 to 16 Feb 1977, Res. to 16 Feb 1979; Pilot. Citation Air Force Cross (NY1969): Not available, but awarded for his most efficient and dedicated service as CO RNZAF Strike Support Unit, Ohakea, during the four year period from May 1965. Wg Cdr Lawry had a varied jet flying career with the RNZAF. Following his wings training at Wigram and jet conversion at Ohakea he joined 14 Sqn RNZAF (Venom) at Tengah, Singapore. A Canberra conversion course at RAF Bassingbourn was followed by a further posting to Tengah on 75 Sqn RNZAF (Canberra), with ferry flights of Canberras from the UK to NZ. In 1961-1962 he served at the CFS and FTS at Wigram followed by further service with 75 Sqn (Vampire) at Ohakea. A two year tour of duty with the RAF at 231 Operational Conversion Unit (1963-1965) was then followed by command of the Strike Support Unit at Ohakea. I just heard the sad news that WWII RNZAF pilot and No. 617 Squadron Tirpitz raid pilot Arthur Joplin passed away last night. He was 99 years old. He was a great bloke. RIP Sir.
