Wow, what a transformation. A brilliant gate guardian. Can they make a mould from the Auckland War Memorial Museum's Spitfire?

What happened to the mould for the canopy after Ossie James' team made the Hamilton one?

What happened to the mould for the canopy after Ossie James' team made the Hamilton one? No idea Dave. The Air Force museum doesn't have a canopy mould with all the Spitfire stuff they have (as we had borrowed it all) and have an 'original' canopy on their Spit. If you know or know of someone who might give us a steer towards the Hamilton mould that would be great

What about the mould they had when they did the Spit for ChCh Airport. I know it was back in the day but I think RNZAF Wigram did it. Know they had to do it twice because some mongrel set fire to the first copy.

Know they had to do it twice because some mongrel set fire to the first copy. The Air Force museum back in the 80's managed to source four tear-drop canopy's from a UK based supplier (no longer in business) at 300 pounds each and had them freighted to NZ. They were used on the ChCh Airport gate guards No's 1&2, the museums own restoration of TE288 as the original was in poor condition and the last one for the Perth based RSL Spit gate guard. It is only the Hamilton canopy mould that hopefully exists somewhere..? Isn't Cambridge close to Hamilton... Dave do you have it stashed away down there...?? ;D

Brendon deere made his own mould, and also has a spare canopy. Indeed he does, however it's for a 'classic' spit canopy for the 'high-back' Spitfire (Brendon and Doug) and not the tear-drop we require for our 'low-back'. Brendon has also kindly offered to help facilitate the making of one should we acquire the correct mould. Making a mould is an option, however it is time consuming, quite expensive and you need to pattern off an original to get the correct profiles etc. Those originals to pattern off are generally not available as a. They're in use on display (static) aircraft (Auckland and Air Force museums), b. Serviceable 'airworthy' examples held for fliers (big $$$), and c. not generally available in the 'after market' spares department due to the rarity of the 'high-back Spitfires. Keep looking chaps...
