Matarangi is the most northern (published) aerodrome on the Coromandel Peninsula, north of Whitianga at the Whangapoua Harbour mouth.

Yes a group of interested people are trying to get it open, CAA are quite receptive, just needs someone to put their hand up as responsible (i.e. liable) person, something the receivers aren't inclined to do.
I did notice 4 aircraft there one day and the strip has been mown. Looks in good nick.
Of course all that may amount to nought if the receivers just decide to sell it up for sections.

Yeah the abbreviations are a pain, but it people not even bothering to get them is a serious concern. parently someone flew into resctricted airspace a month or so ago that was closed for defence force UAV trials - which got a lot of people in high places very annoyed!

Thanks for the explanation of the end date Bruce. Not being a pilot I'm not too familiar with the system. What is the penalty for landing at a closed airfield, and for ignoring/being unaware of a NOTAM? Is there a serious deterrent (fine, suspension of licence, etc?)

Probably CAA action would just be a smack on the hand. The biggie would be possible action by the owner for trespass, and unless there was a genuine emergency necessitating a forced landing, your aircraft insurance would be invalidated so no payout if anything happened.
Pity about Matarangi, yet another fallout from the Hubbard saga. It was the first 'away' airfield I ever landed on, during a Waitemata club trip years ago. Like Pauanui, Matarangi was set up by the developers of the area to try and entice wealthy potential purchasers of properties in the area to short-circuit the lengthy car trip from/to Auckland and commute by air.

Actually more a fall out from Allied Farmers. They were in the shit, their finance company was broke, their farm stores were making losses and out of stock, they owed the bank $16m. They conned the Hanover investors into taking shares for their investment promising the best returns possible. Instead they fire sold the cream of the assets to get themselves out of the crap. They even tried to ring-fence their own equity at the expense of the Hanover mum and dads. All courtesy of Mr $500k-a-year Rob Alloway.
And it was Allied who stopped paying the mortgage on Matarangi sending more millions down the drain.

They were mowing the strip just the other day I was there so maybe plans to re-open? I saw that Cessna land. It was the only aircraft there and was there a few days later. Maybe the owners?

Just been informed by a resident living next to the airfield that CAA have had an observer at Matarangi over Xmas photographing all aircraft landing. Be careful. That aircraft has come in for a lot of attention

Interesting I haven't been to Matarangi for years and it is so now developed. A Google maps search shows a couple of roads across the runway? Harbour Drive and Ngaio Drive along with Rangiora Crescent seem to indicate there will not be an aerodrome there anymore? A real shame as it could also be used to get people out quick in case of emergency. I suppose helicopters would do that in future. I remember years ago when my mum and dad bought a section at Pauanui they got a free flight in the developers 172 to have a look from the air. Fantastic view even then before any waterways were put in. They bought their section for $3000 and sold it 9 years later for $12500. I hate to think how much they are now! Cheers

The existing airfield was always going to be part of the residential development and a new airfield placed on land to the east, you can see the general area on Kereru's map. The problem is that the existing airfield has to be built up by over a metre before it can be built on, read big bucks, very hard to find these days. There are guys trying to strike a deal to retain the existing airfield by creating access around the ends which has been a major bone of contention.
