Does anyone know anything about the RNZAF's railway network?
They had their own trains, their own railways. All the stores depots must have had branchlines - Te Rapa and Weedons did, it makes sense that Mangaroa did too. Not sure about Te Awamutu but there is a railway through that town so probably.
A wartime article in Contact confirms the RNZAF had its own trains. I assume it had RNZAF men as drivers, etc too.
And then there were the secret trains that transported fuel from place to place, such as Cambridge where they brought fuel into the AR.9 Fuel Reserve tank.
Does anyone have any details of the types of trains they had, the engine classes. And any photos? Or recorded accounts?

Interesting...I would think they had dedicated carriages for fuel and ammo etc... however I would be surprised if the Locos were driven by RNZAF staff as the Railways Dept was so large. The railway community would know for sure...Merv Smith!!
