Hi guys, I have just found your page. I am Alan Ward and was CFI at NDAC from 1985 until 1990. Flew for Eagle Air until 1994 and then joined the New Zealand Red Cross as an International Delegate with the International Federation of the Red Cross. Had some fun in Tajikistan, North Sudan and Kazakhstan until 1999. The international Committee of the Red Cross were looking for an Air Operations Coordinator for South Sudan based in Lokichokio Kenya where I stayed for a year extracting war wounded from airstrips in South Sudan. Following 9/11 I was asked to go to Afghanistan in the same capacity in air operations based mainly in Pesharwa, Pakistan and flying into Afghanistan setting up air ops bases and monitoring airfields while coordinating with the RAF and the USAF via the Regional Air Movement Control Center. All very stimulating. I arrived back in Whangarei NZ at the end of September 2002 and have not flown since. Cheers Alan

In addition to my previous post. During my time at NDAC some of the most notable pilots were; Roger Jordan - CPL, Greg Tilly - PPL, Barry Keay - PPL, John Antonovich - PPL, Nash Taurau - CPL, Jim Trewin - PPL, Phil Cooper-CPL, Dave Fife - PPL, Warren Tan - ATPL, Peter Alley - ATPL, John Robertson - ATPL, Ian Cowan - ATPL, Wayne Harris - PPL, Mark Delaney - CPL, Adam Bundle - CPL, Steve Simpson - CPL, Paul Loftus - ATPL, Jim Summerfield - CPL, Phil Hooker - ATPL, Damien Luiten - PPL, Peter Mountfort - ATPL. My log book shows a great many more. A number of the above went on to join airlines and to fly on overseas operations. Hopefully these names will create some more discussion. The callsign 'Foxtrot5' is from my overseas deployments. Cheers Alan

Great stuff Alan. I wondered what became of you quite frequently. I know you from our AESL and NZAIL days at Rukuhia. Hope to hear more from you soon.

Wow Alan, welcome to the WONZ Forum. That is a fascinating flying career you have had there. Would you be interested in being interviewed for The Wings Over New Zealand Show? www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZ_Show.html

Thank you both for the reply. OJ I assume is Owen from AESL and Dave we have not met yet. I keep a low profile and tend to be a grey person these days. If the suggested interview tended to reflect on aviation that I have been involved with I guess that we could talk about that. However I don't really need the personal profile stuff. I have written a number of personal journals which would act as memory joggers and my log books sometimes bring back memories of events. Best regards Alan

Yes Alan, definitely about the aviation, the jobs you worked in and types of aircraft, and the memorable moments during the flying work.

I am not sure how to start. I would prefer the interview to be private due to the nature of some of the events. Please contact me via the email address and we may be able to swap phone numbers. I wrote journals on my five missions for family reference so can draw on this information. Best regards Alan

Regarding Dimitri Zotov, this appeared in The Press on the 22nd of November 1958: CADETSHIP AT CRANWELLCity Student SelectedA 19-year-old University of Canterbury student, Dmitri Zotov, has been awarded a Royal Air Force cadetship at Cranwell. He is the son of Russian-born Mr V. D. Zotov, who came to New Zealand nearly 40 years ago. Mr Zotov was educated at Wellington College, Rongotai College, and completed his secondary education with two years at the Christchurch Boys’ High School. He has not served in the regular or territorial air force. While at Christchurch Boys’ High School last year, he won the New Zealand scholarship to train at the Royal Australian Air Force College at Point Cook, but this was cancelled when the Government decided not to make the award. He has been studying pure mathematics, physics and chemistry at the University of Canterbury this year, and intends to continue his university studies in the United Kingdom. Mr Zotov will leave for Britain in the Athenic on November 28.
