G'day Baz. Like me, you got nothing better to do with your money or your life?! Turning final for RI. As you know I'm not a Cherokee fan but this one's tidy, goes well, reasonable rates, spider tracks, so all-in-all it fills a need. I'll let you know when I'm going next and you can give me some pointers. Always happy to fill seats. Ha ha pointers in what? How to bounce a Cherokee? Ha ha. yeah that would be fun and whats this money you're talking about? ;D Looks like the kids enjoyed themselves, good on you!

That's something that's close to my heart. When I was growing up, my Dad, a PPL and ex RNZAF W.Op and Nav, took me flying a lot. In fact we didn't own a car until I was 7 yrs old. I could never understand how kids at school knew nothing about planes or flying (I must have been a real nerd!) I get much satisfaction when I see the excitement and joy on kids faces when they first fly in a small plane (something I can really relate to). For many they will never do that again but it lasts with them a lifetime. Consider the memories related by oldies who flew as kids in the 1920's etc.

You're right on there, I think, JF. My Dad used to do aerial Photography out of Rotorua for the FRI. I used to go up with him a lot and I was about 6 or 7. Over White Island and all over the BOP. I'll never forget it but I haven't done it since.
Still remember the aircraft too, a Cessna, ZK-DRP.

When I interview ilots I often ask about their first flight. Usually it wasn't till they joined the RNZAF but some went up with Kingsford Smith and other barnstormers. One that surprised me the most was Edward "Bill" Wells who told me a Tiger Moth was visiting Cambridge and he had enough money for a flight. When he got up there he was so terrified and ill that he never ever wanted to fly again. Thank goodness he grew out of that as he turned out one of NZ's top aces.
My first ever flight was to Norfolk Island in a F27 Friendship when I was 9. Still remember it vividly. Air New Zealand. We came home on an EastWest F27.

I've been to Norfolk Island a number of times (B737). I didn't realise the F27 went so far over so much water! Was that common?

Air New Zealand flew the F27 there three times a week I think it was right up till they extended the runway enough to get the Boeings in. Qantas and EastWest also took the F-27's there from Aussie. Not much else bigger in the civilian world could get in up till about 1984 or so. When I was there an Andover came in, first time i saw one. And an RAAF Hercules landed too, so they could get in and out too. Norkolk's own airline had much smaller planes, I can't recall what but probably beech or Piper or some sort of ten seaters or so, which flew regularly to Lord Howe and then Aussie and back, not insignificant distance.

What a great day out. Nothing wrong with the weather in South Canterbury and away from the shaking to boot.
Russell is always helpful and seems to have looked after you well.
Aviation as it should be, operating out of a farm paddock where security fences and the likes are in the distant future.
Excellent stuff and with some great pics. Just a shame the 172 happened to get into a few of them.

Super shots John, what a magic place that is there. I can see why people love to fly in there. I'd love to do it someday.

Dunno yet Joe, I think he's hoping for waterski racing to become a professional sport! He's now hanging out for a ride in the Giles since I've been checked out in it... but it might be a wee way off... one thing being checked out, quite another thing being confident!!

And home again the next day, seed well-and-truly watered! Is that your car Johnny? Seen it a few times if it is. And my hangar is the middle one but on the other side! (If that makes sense!)

Johnnyfalcon....was that strip near Ashburton once owned by a guy called Eddie? Um...the only strips near Ashburton that I'm familiar with are Mesopotamia Station (see previous snow photos) and Rangitata Island (see most other pics) and er Ashburton aerodrome... The only connection with Eddie that I know about is what happens around and through the windsock... :-) I'm a new import to the area so someone else here might be able to provide further insight

From the first page of this thread....... where we saw a series of pics of a class machine. ZK-MND back in it's military days. Michelle 'N Danny had the registration changed, it is only a few dollars to do it. Danny was saying that their daughter pointed out it was a little like Noodlum, - it spelt something else in reverse. The Warrior had performed admirably under the old registration.. it is great to see it still going strongly.
