In "RNZAF: The First Decade" by Charles Darby, there's photo of P-40 NZ3061 on its belly near Ohakea. Uner its canopy it wears four kill markings, three are Japanese and one is the NZ flag. The latter because it destroyed NZ3021 in a midair collision on the 14th of June 1944.
The same plane later destroyed NZ3221 in another air-to-air collision, damaging NZ3012 in the same crunch. I wonder if another NZ flag was added.
It got me thinking about other events. I know an RNZAF P-40 pilot shot down another RNZAF P-40 by mistake in gunnery practice. Does anyone know the details as I can't recall where the reference is.
Does anyone know of other incidents in WWII where RNZAF aircraft destroyed others of their brethren by accident? In the air I mean, there were plenty of grounf pile ups.
