Yes, those were the days. Great selection of photos there.
Is that Neptune a French Navy one?

I recall the C-5 brought the Blackhawks and also some OH-6s (Hughes 500). They disappeared to work with SOF. There is a mix of exercises amongst those photos.

That's Martin Ross (Electrical) in photo number 9, clutching his guts. Probably a bit crook from too much turps the night before! After de-mobbing, Martin worked for many years at NZAIL/PAC/Aeromotive as an Avionics LAME and is still practicing at Hamilton on his own account in the Central Aero Maintenance No. 2 hangar.

A couple more to close out the night. Good to see a couple of 'grey-beards' lurking here that can put some detail towards the various photos . Indeed the C-5 Galaxy did bring down a load of SOF UH-60 Blackhawks and OH-6s that flew around at night really low and with no lights on.! Other SOF visitors were 'black' C-130's from the 1st Special Operations Squadron (SOS) out of Kadena AB, Japan. The RN Harriers was off HMS Invincible post the Falklands War and the RAF Harrier was freighted out in the Ilyushin Il-76

1 X C5 = 3 blackhawks & 3 OH-6 plus heaps of personnel & a stack of parts. The C5 had to park on the disused runway. Wasnt there empty vodka bottles in the Il-76?

I never realised all those aircraft that came out for the airshow at Mangere had gone to Whenuapai. I assumed they were only at the airport. That was a great show, I flew up from Wigram for it. I was sad that one of the reasons I went, to see the James Bond Bede BD-5J - had already been bent the day before. Did that go to Whenuapai too?
Thank goodness Helen stopped all those sneaky American black ops operatives skulking around in our skies getting up to all sorts of god knows what.

That must be the TriStar that brought the boys back from GW1.
Was fun trying to park it on the ramp.

I still wonder what the RAAF were thinking when they chose the colours for that experimental Caribou scheme. ;D

I still wonder what the RAAF were thinking when they chose the colours for that experimental Caribou scheme. ;D They did their Porters in the same scheme, just as well they stopped there, can you imagine a Herc or a Hornet like that?
