My dad, Flt Sgt George Burt, was English, but he served in 489 Squadron throughout WW2. I've been trying to find out how to get hold of a copy of the unofficial history edited by Burrowes to read, and also the DVD of the book launch.
The DVD publishers in New Zealand suggested I might be able to contact Brian and Oz Carlton through this forum to see if it is possible to buy a copy of the DVD.
Help getting hold of either the book or the DVD would be greatly appreciated.
I live in Solihull, England. My mum is still alive and would also love to see these.
Best wishes,
Richard Burt
Many thanks

Thanks for the replies. I've since visited the Imperial War Museum in London to read their copy of the '489 Unofficial History...'. I found a surprising reference to someone who could only have been by dad, unless more than one Sgt Burt served in the squadron.
The paragraph (page 27) recalls a flight on 14th May 1943 when "Flt Lt J Dubbery DFC and his crew of three New Zealanders were shot down by German fighters. They survived the crash-landing on the sea and, after five hours in their dinghy, were picked up at dusk by a Finnish ship which ad nearly run them down. As the Finns were allied with the Germans against Russia at this time, the airmen (Flt Lt J. Dubbery, DFC; Sgt Lavin, Plt Off Simmons and Sgt Burt) were landed at Egersund that night and became prisoners of war."
Based on the premise that by dad, Sergeant George Burt RAFVR was mistakenly remembered as a New Zealander, then I'm guessing that he served two years in a POW before repatriation in April/May 1945.
This came as a complete shock to me and my mum, who is still alive, although I have recollections that he was shot down.
On his '543' record of service, there is no reference to this, but there is reference to a Beaufighter Airframe qualification dated on 20/9/43 and 12/10/43.
I also have a 1944 Christmas Day menu card from RAF Station Dallachy signed by members of the squadron, including Don Tunnicliffe, whose name I recognise.
Can anyone help shed light on this mystery?
Richard Burt
PS Dad was also Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished service with 489, published in the London Gazette on 14th June 1945.

George, The 489 Sqn 'Burt' that was shot down/PoW in May 1943 was not your dad but RNZAF WOp/AG NZ404630 Glen Robertson Burt. Errol That aircraft is Hampden P4304. According to the RAF Commands PoW Index the Pow's are listed as: NZ403755 Brier D A NZ404630 Burt G R 142851 Buberry J, DFC, RAFVR NZ404374 Jones A H.
Rather different crew list. The index has no references for Lavin or Simmons.

Hi Richard - 489s Unofficial History is available for the public to review in several UK air museums including the RAF museum, York Air Museum and East Fortune. In addition there is a copy at Fochbehars - near 489's Dallachy base and possibly at the Bluebell Hotel - near Langham, Norfolk. (For those living in other countries, copies are available in libraries and air museums in Canada, Australia and Norway) I suggest that you join 489 Squadron Association to keep up with further developments. I am currently editing 2 further volumes - the first Early Days, relates to the Early experiences of 489 Squadron personnel and 489's operations up to the end of the hampden era, the second is a Roll of Honour covering those who died whilst serving with 489 Squadron. kind regards - David Burrowes

Here's an article on No. 489 (NZ) Squadron:
Evening Post, Volume CXXXIII, Issue 91, 18 April 1942, Page 6
N.Z. BOMBER SQUADRON
TRAINING NOW BEING COMPLETED
LONDON, April 16. A New Zealand bomber squadron is now completing its training. Its crest includes fern leaves and the Scotch thistle, because the squadron was formed in Scotland. The crest will be painted on all the aircraft. The New Zealand High Commissioner in London, Mr. Jordan, accompanied by an air liaison officer, Mr. John Gamble (Wellington), and a naval liaison officer, Mr. S. R. Skinner, arrived in time to see the squadron flying over the station in its first big formation flight.
The New Zealanders are operating Hampdens,. and at present are engaged in long-distance flights for navigational practice. Later they will learn bombing and mine-laying. They have a comfortable mess, and each flight has its offices in farmhouses. One is named "Slapfanny Farm Incorporated" and the other "Honeysuckle Cottage."
The A flight selected a white horse as its mascot, each member wearing a miniature, one of which was presented to Mr. Jordan. This flight also started a "rumble book," in which offenders' names are posted, with mild fines imposed for minor offences, for example, taxi-ing with flaps down and taking off without signing.
Aucklanders form the majority of the men in the squadron, for which reason Mr. Jordan was told that they hoped Auckland would officially "adopt" them. When Mr. Jordan last saw the squadron in Scotland, it was fretting because of the protracted training. This time they greeted him with smiling faces, since they were flying from dawn to dusk, but they will not be thoroughly happy till the start of operations.
PRAISE FOR COMMANDERS. New Zealanders in the squadron total 68. They will operate 20 Hampdens. They speak in the highest terms of the English commanding officer, a wing commander, and also of their English flight commanders.
While Mr. Jordan was talking to them he saw a squadron of Bostons calling in at the station for lunch after a bombing raid against Le Havre. Among the crews was Pilot Officer Observer I. S. Rutherford. (Poverty Bay), who has completed his fourth trip in Bostons: Some of the machines bore signs of flak punctures acquired over Le Havre. Mr. Jordan spoke to a Canadian who had a piece of flak pierce his aircraft two'feet from him.
Mr. Jordan also talked to Pilot Officer Observer H. W. Thomson (Invercargill), who is flying in Hudsons. He escorted destroyers who returned from the raid on Saint Nazaire. He told Mr. Jordan that Sergeant K. J. Summerhays (Auckland) and Pilot Officer B. Beechy (Christchurch) were flying Hudsons in Gibraltar. Flight Lieutenant B. Wheeler (Wanganui) is in the same squadron as Pilot Officer Observer Rutherford, but was absent on leave. The station commander told Mr. Jordan: "Your New Zealanders are grand boys."

Hi Richard
I am unsure if we have answered your question re a copy of 489 Squadron's history for your family. If not, please get in touch with me ASAP as there may still be a copy left along with a copy of the DVD. I am currently editting a further volume re 489 - Early Days - which deals with the pre beaufighter era and inital training in more detail. e are wanting expressions of interest re this now (again this will only available to 489 personnel and their families)

Davidnzl why publicize a book you are writing on the history of one of New Zealand's squadrons when it is really a private book not released to the general public. I just can't get my head around this attitude you have towards not sharing it. I can only think this book and one of other talked about here it is by great men about things and losses they have seen and have not/can not even share with thier families or anyone, but feel the need to share with thier fellows sqn crews before thier experiences are lost forever,I know a little about those feelings if i am correct

Hi Gunny as you can see from the quote attached that some of the members that supplied information are upset that the book was not made available to the public. It is quite interesting. A long time ago the author contacted me and asked where he could find certain information on his father's squadron because he was writing a book on his father. I directed him to a number of sources and after some correspondence he contacted me and told me that he had changed tack and was going to write about the squadron. I felt he was trustworthy and that it was a worthwhile project so I connected him with a few veterans that I had met over the years. In return he promised me a copy of the book. When it was published he told me that he wouldn't give me one because they were all going to veterans and 'he had no intention of giving copies to collectors' - I reminded him of his promise and his response was that "everyone says that' - the only difference is that I have his emails still when he expressed great delight in being told about certain individuals. The book was not written by him - it was written by the veterans and edited into the book. This stuff about issues with the copyright are simply self imposed - I have spoke to many who are offended that the information they provided is being restricted in its distribution. If you think about it the book would not have been possible if Burrows had not been give the information by the veterans and yet that is all that others want - access to the information. To have a copy and to enjoy it and share it with others. Thats why people buy books. It is not as if he served on the squadron and owned the experiences and the information. I have been given a few copies on permanent load by veterans who were offended by his stance. I have also picked up a few new 486 manuscripts written by members of the squadron - the editor is writing another book (using the same approach of getting the info from the squadron members) and these manuscripts would be very useful and I am not adverse to giving him access - my purpose has always been to collect the information about what has been written so that it does no disappear after a few generations. That why I published the bibliography and collected all the manuscripts I have - to share with researchers and authors. The situation is more sad than odd and does our veterans a dis-service in my mind. I have spent sometime now looking into what is available on the 489 and if people on this site and others are prepared to help I would like to do a history on the squadron. The format I would use would be similar to the 485 and 486. So it would be case bound on a coated stock not on offset as the present one. I have been in the printing and Marketing industry for the last 30 years and have been involved in publishing and producing books. The most successful of these was the book "Port to Port - a pictorial history of Ahuriri' which I wrote and produced myself. It had two additions and sold over 3500 copies. The other books I have been involved with are all history book about Napier. I am 3/4 of the way through doing a follow up of the Port to Port which I will eventually print through China with a similar print run of 3500. If any out there is willing to help with this idea could they please contact me.
