I am told on fairly good authority that the Government has been footing the bill for reunions and flights to and from for No. 28 Battalion members for some years. Surprised?

Before everyone continues to blame Wayne Mapp on this, let's not forget he is Minister of Defence and was there representing the Defence Force. It is Judith Collins who is the Minister of Veterans Affairs, and her Ministry is the one that held back funds for the veterans. She has now publicly acknowledged that they made a mistake in doing so, and not only have the veterans been reimbursed their expenses but also Collins is now drafting a paper to submit to Parliament to ensure such a case never happens again as the 70th Anniversaries continue to roll around (El Alamein, Guadalcanal, Italy/Cassino, D Day, etc). So I think perhaps a valuable lesson has actually been learned.
I do agree that Mapp's expenses for a short stay there seem rather excessive, but sadly there's not much that can be done if it's all within Parliamentary rules.
